Wash. Preschoolers Given Dog Food to Eat

TACOMA, Wash. - A teaching assistant gave some preschoolers dog food to eat during a play-acting exercise at Northeast Tacoma Elementary School. A Tacoma School District spokeswoman said the children spat out the dry dog food and no one suffered any ill effects.

The teaching assistant has been placed on paid leave pending an investigation.

District spokeswoman Patti Holmgren said it happened Monday in an early education class while the supervisor was out of the room.

When a few of the students pretended to be puppies, getting down on their hands and knees and barking, the assistant attempted to encourage their playacting. She fetched a packet of dry dog food from another room and placed bits on paper plates on the floor.

The dog food came from a display intended to teach the preschoolers what not to eat, Holmgren said.

School Principal Pat Flores learned about the incident Tuesday after a parent complained. In a letter sent Wednesday to parents, Flores called the event "unfortunate."
 
It's just dry dog food, not toxic kitchen products.

Nobody would get sick from it. I've tried some Milkbone biscuits, they taste very dry. Though I wouldn't continue to eat them, not my type of biscuits.

Liberals will never get it! That teacher is protesting about newt gingrich on his republican views on taking away the school lunch programs. I agree with newt gingrich. Ever heard the old saying """ Theres no such thing as a free lunch"""
Why dont we start living that way instead of wasting taxpayers dollars on children getting free lunches.The parents should be paying for their own childs lunch. It doesnt cost much to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches put em in a lunch bag along with a quart of milk or juice or even a little bag of crackers to go with it. Im glad bush and the repubicans are in charge and the liberals are not. Face it! The bad old days of liberalism is over!!! GET USED TO IT! The teachers idea using dog foor is what diane finestein said on the senate floor complaining about republicans taking away the free school lunch programs. She said this quote,,, The republicans wanna starve your children,Put your grandmother out on the street and make her eat dog food!,,, She was expressing the republican anti womens and children programs as well cutting social security funds. Now theyre people who will belive that the republicans wanna starve your children and put your grandmother out on the street and make her eat dog food. Now you dont belive that now do ya?

Yeah, I’ve munched on dry dog food a couple of times myself. Not much to get excited about. Kind of tastes like stale Wheat Thins, if you ask me. :| But not only is dog food nontoxic, it’s extremely nutritious. Since it’s fairly low in fat, it would actually make a pretty good diet food.

What is WRONG with this woman?! I'm all for encouraging a young child to use his or her imagination, but this is just stupid. There are far better and more appropriate ways to encourage play. I hope the woman was reprimanded for her stupidity.

You're right, Banjo. The kids probably won't get sick from this, but it still was a very inappropriate thing to do, and the parents had a right to complain about it.

It's food, there's nothing inappropriate about it. It's only the idea of that it is a "dog" food that caused the uproar.

That's what I believe.

Eh, yeah, maybe. :) I can see your point. It is kind of gross to think about eating dog food, but how many of us have eaten dog biscuits before? LOL I bet quite a few!

I can't honestly say that I have or haven't. I don't ever remember doing so, but my nephew used to (of course, he was two at the time lol), so it's not out of the rhealm. :)

But, rest assured! I bet many parents went nuts when they heard what the teacher did! lol

I think the teacher did was wrong. beside it isn't her way of teaching children what food they are not suppose to eat. It is the parents job. Beside I've never heard anyone would make some kids get on their knees and act like a puppy. :eek2:

MMMM u said put em in a lunch bag along with a quart of milk so What year was that kids drank Quart of Milk? I never seen any of school lunch have Quart of Milk. They do have Pint of Milk carton in cafeteria or Gallon of Milk to put Paper cup for Pre-school or Daycare kids.

Today they do have Lunch Program for Low income families which they can't afford to pay Lunch. They do get free lunch from Goverment if they go enroll HeadStart.

It doesnt cost much to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and even a little bag of crackers to go with it. That is not enough for kids to have limited. Where are Fruits or raw vegetables? Yogurt? Healthy foods to keep children growth and strong bones. You know that children always hungry than just limited PBJ and Small bag of Crackers.

Why dont we start living that way instead of wasting taxpayers dollars on children getting free lunches.The parents should be paying for their own childs lunch.
U forget about Poverty Families or/and Single mothers who have child/children. They might have no job, no money, or feel struggle with children with their needs. How can we live that way if we have so little money to pay lunch and have support kids at home such as feed them, clothes them, and actives for fun? No way for single mothers and poverty families have so much money to pay. I think that are best for Taxpayers and Parents to get free lunch to Save children from Hunger and Suffer. IF i am rich or mother-working, i willing to pay tax to support children who are poverty or on goverment such as SSI, AFDC, or others. I will feel empathetic for children. Today is more harder for families who can't find a job cuz the Job must have Experience or certificate from college plus pay mortage, car, children's needs, and foods on table.

Public schools do provide free lunch for low income families.:)
 
Ergh...I've never tried eating any types of food that were meant for pets only...:P Didn't have the guts to try, :lol:.
But I've heard that people who were soooo tight with money and poor -- often would eat cat or dog food as they are very nutritious and cheap. *shrugs*

Thats the reason why our goverment is in a national debt problem. The democrats have no idea what a balenced budget is. A budget is if you dont have the money for it YOU DONT BORROW AND SPEND . I cant even get away with that you have any idea what loan officers at the banks treat ordinary working people? They can have your loan request denied! And that where the G.O.P comes in. The liberals can request the G.O.P what they want but it doesnt mean theyre gonna get it. Just like those mean old bank loan officers do to ordinary working people.
