After all the gay or straight men go, they will call for deaf men.

I was told that Donald Rumsfeld really NEEDS you to be in Iraq immediately. You are a professional pee at Saddam's face. You better hurry up to make the reservation flight one way to Iraq tonight.

Keep us a posted daily. How are you doing in Iraq? ;)

I heard, they draft the young men who are in good athletic. Both of my two sons have flat feet and younger one has curve back. I do not think that they would annoy them with letters or phone calls.

I am surprised that they annoyed your son. It seems not fair to burden on your son. That is government does their job not your son. I would change my telephone number if they consistently harassed my sons.

My son just turns 18 last December. I did remind him to fill out the form. He keeps postpone. Grrrrrr ! I will get his ass to fill that out form. If he doesn't do this, he could arrest or big fine on that.

Government is suck!! I would be freak out if they draft either of my son from my nest !

I thought Americans sign to join soliders voluntarily?

I know the German must go to solider for 13 months after finish school/college/unvisersity/job practice. They will pay the fine if they didnt fill out the form. They have to decide to join army for 13 months or as carer in mental hospital for 13 months.

Ur right our government sucks.....! My son did filled out the register form during in his senior year then got it in mail few months ago, threating him to go to jail if he did not register it. He said he did registered it at school but it somehow got lost it so he had to fill it out again. Hate being bullied from our own government by threating to put our kids in jail for not register. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Your son and my son are only few months apart. He turned 18 last summer.

But then again, he is not fit to be a soldier till his knee heal, he had a surgery on his knee 2 years ago. They said "I will call u again in 3 years". They expected his knee to be strong enough after 3 years.

They must be hungry for more young men and women to join up cuz they run out of young people.

I must PUSHY my son to fill out that register. Grrrrrrrrr !

The National Guard base Ft. Stewart in Georgia and Ft. Benning in South Carolina has deaf enlistees. They keep eye on the base while the hearies go to battle.

I'm on the commissioner's board and were fixing to have the California's Angels's Camp National Guard base staffed with deaf enlistees.

That'd be the 3rd base for deafies!

Haha, come on...I am not sure as if you were just joking. They don't want men or women with disabilities, period. Everyone knows that, anyways.

She wasn't joking.

You're right, Douglas, it's upsurd. In order to be in the military, one must be in tip-top shape. You pass a physical just to get in. Back in the 60s, my Dad was rejected for military service because of his eyesight. If they told him "sorry", what makes you think they won't tell a deaf person the same thing, or someone in a wheelchair like myself?

Guess what? They will!

I got a burning question.

Why cant people with flat feet or curved backs serve in military? Somewhere in the thread there was a mention of that and it got me wondering.

No I am not joking. Take a look at these pics of the the stuff that went on at Ft. Stewart. And some of the pics has a familiar name many deafies'll recognize.

Lt. Colonel Williams formally announced that the Georgia National Guards and the Youth Challenge Academy will accept their first deaf cadet for the 5 months military program for Jan. 21, 1998. The program, in cooperation with the Military Affairs Coordinating Committee and the Georgia Council for the Hearing-Impaired, is designed to give disadvantage youths, 16-21, another opportunity to earn a GED with a guarantee Hope scholarship, courtesy of Governor Miller, for college. Senator Mike Crotts was initially responsible for having opened the door for the deaf to gain access. (Photos courtesy of Henry County DEAF Purviews )

Every American man is required by law to register for the draft within 30 days before or 29 days after his 18th birthday. Every man is subject to the draft until his 26th birthday. Anyone who willfully fails to register for the draft may face legal charges. The maximum penalty for non-registration is a fine of up to $250,000 and a sentence of up to six years in prison.

Interesting!

As far as I know the British and Australian boys don't have to register for the draft.

I sincerely hope that they will not take your sons away from you or Sabrina (or any parents).

A friend of Nas shared his concern about possible draft... Know what he said about how to resolve this draft issue? He said he will shoot one of his toes off when draft comes up so that's way they cannot take him into the army. I am sure that you can imagine how scared he is when he said that... His friends shared the similar concerns and plan on how to get out of draft as well. I would if deafies are next to draft... It is no way for me to fight and die for Bush's immoral war.

deaflibrarian, I believe Swedish and Finnish citizens are required to have military training for certain duration then released to become to recieve citizenship or something. Liza can correct my statement about Finland if I made a error in this comment.

Well, Liza live in Norway. I know it's close to Finland, but she don't live there.

Though she might know something.

I got an email from a a friend who was VERY upset that her son in high school was tricked into taking an ASVB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test. It seems that there were military recruiters at the school in question. What were they doing there for crying out loud??? Something STINKS about this, and I thought I would pass my concerns along to you. I googled and found out that yes, this is happening in our schools. The military are seeking more cannon fodder I guess. Sighhhhh, now what???
http://www.antiwar.com/whitehurst/?articleid=5049

Beowulf, I'm not sure how old you are, but this was the case back when I was in High School. I graduated in 1991 and the ASVAB as well as recruiters were in our schools back then. The test, nor recruiters are nothing new in schools. This isn't something new.

As for terrorists, they are nothing new (except bringing it to US soil). Terrorism against the US has been around as long as I can remember. Being a kid, I didn't quite know what those images on TV meant but I do remember them.

There is a news story that came out today about a large weapons smuggling ring that was busted trying to smuggle large weapons into the US. The story can be found HERE

Fort Benning is in Georgia, not South Carolina.

The National Guard does not enlist Deaf people.

The young people in the National Guard's Youth Challenge Academy are not enlisted into the military. It is a program for high school dropouts, to give them a second chance at education and life.

http://www.scguard.com/challenge/
The South Carolina Military Department continues its commitment to programs that enhance the community. One of these programs targets at risk youth. It is the South Carolina National Guard's Youth ChalleNGe Academy. The Youth ChalleNGe Academy is a 17 month program that uses military structure and discipline to increase the employability and educational levels of at risk youth. The 22 week residential phase is located on the campus of the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School. After cadets complete the initial 22 weeks, they return to their home communities for a 12 month mentoring phase. ChalleNGe cadets are South Carolina residents age 16 to 18, male or female, drug free, unemployed high school dropouts with no legal impediments to success. Cadets learn teamwork, self-worth, citizenship, individual responsibility, and life and work skills in addition to academic classwork primarily focused on the GED. The Youth ChalleNGe Academy can accommodate 225 students per class with 2 classes per year. The South Carolina Academy is 1 of 20 in the nation. Each program is federally funded through the National Guard Bureau with funds starting the first year at $2.1 million dollars. Matching state funds of 25% the first year increase to 40% over five years.

ELIGIBILITY REGUIREMENTS

A cadet must be a citizen of South Carolina and legal resident of the United States

Entrance is open to both male and female, 16 to 18 years of age

A high school dropout to include expulsions from the school system

Unemployed or Underemployed

Drug Free (ALL CADETS WILL BE TESTED)

A cadet cannot be under indictment or convicted of a felony offense

Each cadet must be physically and mentally capable of completing the Academy

Registration for Selective Service is mandatory for males 18 years and older. Registration is not the same as enlistment in the military. Enlistment in the military is voluntary.

I hope that helps. :)

Whoa Reba, what a contradiction you are, especially since you claim to be a long-time Navy serviceperson. You were a woman in the military, why are you asking a question like that?
I volunteered for service. I was not drafted. I do not believe women should be drafted. Therefore, no contradiction.

The main reason for a draft is to fill combat billets. IMO, women should not serve in combat, including certain ships and aircraft. Therefore, they should not be drafted. That has been my position for many years, based on research that I did for a paper, common sense, and my personal experience.

Women should be required to register for the Selective Service, period.
Since I don't believe that women should be drafted, there is no reason to register them with Selective Service.

Mz. Reba, women make up more than 55% of the population in the USA.
So? What's your point?

Women have been squawking about the ERA, equal pay, enlisting in the military, admittance to the USMA, USNA, USAFA, the Citadel, etc., for the past 30 years and you're asking me "why should they" be required to register for the Selective Service.
I believe the purpose of the military is to defend our country thru military might, and the threat of military force. It is not the purpose of the military to provide equal opportunity employment to anyone who desires it. Women can, and have, served bravely and nobly over the years. However, I believe they can serve best in non-combat roles. Would that limit promotions and career opportunities for women in the military? Probably. But like I said, the military doesn't exist to meet the needs of individual career goals.

Why does the USA think only men should be registered?
Because, in general, men are more physically suited for combat roles.

What are the reasons women haven't been required? The "because women give birth" excuse is utter crock. Without sperm, women cannot giver birth so give me a break.
An expectant father can still physically perform combat duties. An expectant mother cannot.

The "because women are not violent" is also utter crock because we all know how violent women can get when provoked or in fear for their lives.
The military doesn't want "violent" men either. Maybe you mean disciplined aggression?

The "because women menstruate" is simply laughable because after all we now have the 4 times a year period pill, and besides the military has the ability to regulate their women soldiers' periods as I am sure Mz. Reba can attest.
It must be something new. During my 24 years in the Navy/Naval Reserve, I never heard about the military having an ability to "regulate their women soldiers' periods". If that is true, I wonder how so many military women become pregnant while in combat zones, and on board ships.

It is only fair that if women are going around squawking about equal pay and fair treatment in the workplace and the military then all women that are 18 years old bloody well better be lining up to register for the Selective Service when they turn 18 just like men are and they should be getting penalized just like men are if they don't register.
Equal pay and fair treatment in the work place is an issue separate from military service. I do believe women should be treated fairly in the service, and when a man and woman are performing the same services in the military, and are the same rate/rank, with the same number of years seniority, then they should get the same pay and benefits.

Our country should not depend on women to fulfill its combat billet requirements. Those should be filled by men. If our country ever gets to the point where it depends on women to satisfy our combat needs, then we will truly be in deep trouble. Other nations view that as a weakness, and look down on countries that use their women in combat roles.

All Americans should be required to register for the Selective Service when they turn 18, and to say "why should they?" because 55% of Americans are female is just simply not acceptable in today's society.
Just "because 55% of Americans are female" isn't a very convincing argument for drafting women.
