Warning - Extremely Heartbreaking

I'm still not comfortable with that idea at all. Military is not all about discipline. They will train you as a weapon of war so I'm not comfortable about it at all. Training ex-convict how to kill, blow up, etc. Instead - how about Civil Engineer program - construction?

That's a good thought too, there are other jobs besides front line.
Some might even be able to get into technical fields, if they have a talent for it... though I don't know if that would be accepted very well by peers.

still better than putting them into military. There is this burger joint in Newark that hires only ex-convicts. Training ex-convicts all tools of trades in military gives me a huge creep. :Ohno: Imagine.... they can learn how to rob the bank effectively (remember LA bank robbery), be hired by mafia as a hitman, or even be a far more effective, elusive serial killer. SCARY! :Ohno::-o I'm sure there are many people in construction field have criminal records. Government could set up a program with them to make it easier for ex-convicts to get a job in it. I strongly refuse to let ex-convicts into any field that requires use of weapons.

Good thoughts, there.
It would be hard to ensure that they don't take the training to become a more effective criminal... I think some would definitely go that route, especially if they want to get into organized crime.

But not ever military job requires you to carry a weapon, and killing the enemy may not be the main job function. As you said not on the front lines.

But you are still thinking violent prisoners, as I said violent prisoners would not be allowed into the program right off the bat, they would have to prove they can mellow out, can follow orders, and can be a model inmate despite their crimes. Not just over a 12 month span, but Im talking they have to prove it to the warden over a period of 5 five years before they are even considered for the program. One disciplinary action against them means they are automatically ineligible for the program. They have to be model inmates and prove it.

The military is more than just infantry positions. Enlisteds usually take technical jobs that can easily translate into a management position in the civilian workforce.

Exactly, but I think for any military position, you have to complete basic, which involves at least weapons familiarization and basic combat training... they would have to be given a different course of training to avoid the weapons, which may not be fair (as it would be like they are getting the jobs easier than non convicts)

And honestly, I can just see prison gangs with connections to the outside recruiting non violent criminals secretly, in exchange for money (or by force), to see if they will try to get combat training and then bring it back with them to their people on the street, or even work for them.

not necessarily 'easier'. The other soldiers do need to be served food and given supplies. Someone has to manage the food and supplies and ensure that there is enough of them in stock.

The vehicles need mechanics, the bases need construction workers, plumbers, welders, electricians. The military hospitals need Nursing Assistants. The military also has its own publications and telebroadcasts, so they need people to fill these positions too. The bases in the US and overseas will need groundskeepers to mow and maintain cleaniness. Its not always 'easy' to do the above tasks, but they need to be filled. The Army isnt just platoons of men wearing green carrying assault rifles ready to kill at any given moment. It is so much more.
