US Navy rescues sick child from disabled sailboat

Oops. My bad. I thought it was an actual ship. I just looked on-line, and it says that if one sees this "ghost ship", that person is screwed. Interesting. Makes me wonder if anyone has ever seen it.

Normally, the government doesn't bill people for rescues. (Maybe they should, in some cases.)

Do you remember the story about the boy in a 'run away a balloon ? It was a hoax for the dad to get his show on TV . I think the dad had to pay for all he man power used in saving his boy who was in the garage the whole.
I agree , if people put their self and family in harm way like these parents did they should pay for their rescue . I never got the money back I gave to a family that when a road trip with their baby and a small son. The baby got very sick and their truck broke down. No one would help the family b/c the husband was Black and wife was White. I knew the family they where friend of my ex b/f . The wife did sew me a dress to try and repaid me . I never bugged them about money , I knew they did not have it . I am glad I could help the baby get back home to see a doctor. I did not think it was very bright going on a road trip with 2 small kids when you do not have a lot $$$ to spend. .

Satellite phone. I don't know of too many people who actually own one of these, as they're not cheap. And as for paying Coast Guard and the Navy, good question. I dunno about that.
just food for thought. if they can afford a sailboat.... they can easily afford a satellite phone. few people would be stupid not to have one.

and Reba's right. it doesn't cost them a dime for a rescue operation. if you're stranded in middle of ocean.... Coast Guard (or sometimes military will get involved) will find you. if you're stranded in middle of nowhere (land), SAR will find you.

I agree, especially because the younger one had food poisoning prior to the trip. They could face legal troubles, too.

what? legal troubles? lol obsessing with the law again?

that's like saying bringing a child with you on road trip or plane will get you in a legal trouble if a child got sick.

It did say that, but I wonder what it takes to get permission to travel around the world by water? Wouldn't they need passports and certain paperwork to do this?

All you need is a passport to enter foreign ports. The open seas are just that--open. They don't belong to any country.

Watch out for pirates, especially in the Indian Ocean.

and you need to carry a flag of your country

the kids were too young. Many cruise ships have doctors on board.
I think the government will send the family a bill for using the four PJs who parachuted and a Navy ship...
The did that with another family in the ocean years ago.

I find it interesting that child is require by law to sit in the back seat of a car in baby seat and strapped in but not in a sailboat that out in the middle of a deep ocean .

because a child can survive a car crash that way. what is a sailboat going to crash into? being strapped in a boat is exactly not what you would want to because you will go down with a boat after crashing.

I don't know what's with all these fuss about bringing a child to sailboat. It doesn't bother me at all. not a single bit.

Parents bring their children to ski at double black diamond.... teach guns... go hunting together... fly overseas together.... road trips in RV... etc. this is nothing comparable to families living in Africa out in the wild.

what's the big deal????? have we become overly sensitive scaredy cat and coddled in this modern country?

I'm not saying you're wrong but you might have more credibility after you have children of your own.

I hope parents who take risks with their kids don't expect government agencies to always come to their rescue.

I know why a child used a car seat , I was wonder why not in a sailboat too , I can see your point. I at least hope the kids had lifejacket the whole time.
I don't think the older child did.

I live near sea lakes and rivers and every year I read of one or two children drowning.Mostly come down to stupidity on parents side

I believe it was how long the kids where going to be in the sailboat. And it look like they where right to be concern b/c the sailboat broke down and the baby got sick. My daughter was allowed to do water sports , rope climbing ,skiing ,breakdancing . She was not coddled at all . My mother coddled after I was run over by a car and I hated it . I was not going to that to my child.
