update on frankie

from experience dont go special stroller(i still have nightmares about mine)

my dad up till i was 8ish used a really good canvas pack which he cut leg holes in and placed a firm cushion in the bottom

the backpack allowed to hunting, tramping and enjoy "normal for my family" actives

oh no..frank is 30 pounds now, and there is no way i could haul him around..im too fat and out of shape!

You could get in shape. There are people who carry their eleven year olds on their back and originally thought they were too out of shape to do it.:P

oh i could...but i think even if i were, lugging around a heavy kid wouldnt work for me. even more so if he were 11 :D :D

30lbs is nothing dad used the pack till i 80lbs

but your made up your mind

Easier said than done. And in a homemade canvas backpack? Everyone has their limitations.

frankiesmom - I love these pics of Frankie and his new bed. I think it's a great thing for him. Seems like maybe he might sleep a little better so you can get your rest at night as well. Am I right?

its what i am hoping! he only got up once last night and it was heaven..except i have been "programmed" to wake up all night long, so i would wake up anyways..but that was ok as i could just go back to sleep.
and as for easier said than done, its more like having the desire to lug around a toddler like that.. i love my frankie doodle more than life itself, but i dont want to be fused to him 24/7. i dont think he would either..i tried the baby wearing thing when he was a little baby and he would get ultrapissed after a while. he is never but a foot away from me during the day anyways, so i think we have covered the whole bonding thing anyways.

:giggle: :giggle:

I love the cute pictures of Frankie and his new bed! just 2 cute and that's why everybody loves a curlyhead especially me! :D

I would strongly advise against this and go with the stroller. As Frankie ages, a stroller would be much more practical than lugging him around.

I don't know if he'll eventually learn to walk (my guess is probably), so a wheelchair might not be necessary, but if it is, I'd get one. You have to factor in a lot of things besides your own health. Once Frankie nears puberty, he will gain weight. He is also likely to grow taller. It will be very difficult to carry him everywhere at that point.

Besides which, HE will appreciate the ability to have moblity on his own. Hopefully, he will learn to walk, but if he doesn't, it would much more rewarding for him to be able to push himself from place to place than have someone carrying him everywhere he wants to go.

well, maybe your dad enjoyed hauling a kid around on his back. i would not.

:hmm:

Not to mention, not very rewarding for him. He will appreciate whatever independance he will eventually have. If he is able to learn to walk, that would be awesome, but for some reason, he isn't, the stroller (and eventual wheelchair), is much more practical. It also would be a self esteem booster for HIM to be able to move himself from place to place than to have MOM or Dad doing it FOR HIM.

oh no. frankie can walk but he cant walk very far, and he is unable to follow directions or have any idea of where he wants to go..its definitely better for him to be in a stroller. that and he cant drink his bottle sitting up and has to be flat.

Thank you for clarifying that. It certainly is much better for him (and you) than for you to carry him everywhere. Especially, as he gets older and heavier.

well yeah, and i dont want him to expect me to carry him all the time..i have seen people carrying school kids in a pack and that is a bit much to me. maybe if i had 1 kid it would be different but im always surrounded by them it seems!

Sorry but way im reading this thread

Is you that will never accept he needs a chair and that you will use the stroller (larger ones that will need to purchased as he grows)as long possible

Please tell im wrong

I think you're wrong. She can clarify, too. But, keep in mind, Frankie is a baby/toddler. He walks somewhat, but as she clarified for short distances. Expecting her to carry him is just not practical. It's hoped (if one is being optimistic and this Mother sure seems to be), that he WILL eventually walk! But, for RIGHT NOW, the best way for her to manage him is with a stroller. It's really no different than any other parent with a baby or toddler who use strollers; except this one is designed to fit Frankie's needs.

he just fell asleep after an afternoon of chasing the dog through the living room, and running all over the place with his toys. he totally doesnt need a wheel chair. he needs something to keep him safe and contained when we go places. if he were crippled, of course i would get him what he needs, but hes not. he just has some safety issues that i am hoping he grows out of.
and besides if he needed a wheelchair..what would be wrong if i decided to use a stroller in the mean time? luckily, he can walk so he doesnt.

exactly! he just needs a little extra restraint because he enjoys flopping around with abandon, and well, thats not too good when you are rounding a corner.

And, forgive me for assuming that Frankie was NOT ambulatory. I had assumed that since you ordered the special stroller he wasn't, but that was my mistake. It sounds like with a lot of therapy and patience, he'll go a long way. I'm so glad that you did get him this stroller, because you're right, safety comes first.

I should note that I am disabled and wheelchair bound. When I was young I walked with the aid of braces and crutches, but that soon went by the wayside. Once that happened, I used a chair. I can tell you that from experience, it's a heck of a lot better for everyone than having someone carry me! And, as I mentioned, once I reached a certain age, being carried was virtually impossible as I gained weight and it became impossible.

What we're after here is for Frankie to be mobile AND safe. The stroller is the answer!

Btw, I've seen these strollers, and they are NEAT!!! :)

Precisely, the key with kids with disabilties is that you need to give them special needs stuff and see if they can benifit from it. Just b/c you hated the special needs stroller, it doesn't mean that Frankie won't....Besides, Frankie will prolly only need it for a bit.
