Tropical storm Irene approaches

DAMMMMN!!!! looks like it is a possible that a part of our roof blew off...water is coming through the ceiling in our master bathroom.

We dont have hurricane home insurance so does that mean no insurance coverage?

Oh, dang! I would think that your homeowner's would cover it unless you live in a hurricane prone area. In that case, your mortage holder would probably require you to have "hurricane coverage." But I don't know for sure. I'm just going on experience with flood damage.

So, in the areas that are prone to certain weather elements, homeowners should buy insurance for that specific element? Like, in CA, it would be earthquake insurance while here in MD, we dont need it in order to cover any costs of earthquake damage?

Absolutely.

That is my understanding. I had a house that was in a flood plain. It had not flooded for many years, but was still identified that way. The bank that had my mortgage insisted that I purchase flood insurance. But it would have been silly for me to purchase hurricane insurance because I was so far inland.

Ok so if a rare hurricane hits you and your house gets damaged, your insurance will cover the costs even though you dont have hurricane insurance?

Just making sure.

Just asked my mom how much she pays for her homeowners insurance (in Miami). $3900 smackaroos!! Damn..... Mine (in Huntsville, AL) is only about 600-700..... Bwahahahaha

Insurance companies have bumped it up everytime a hurricane goes through and does damage.

Glad to hear everyone I know up there is okay!

My home insurance a year is about the same as Reba's...$1,500 a year. Daredevel...that's HIGH about your parents' insurance. Do they live in a mansion or a large home?

Yowch! Mine is roughly under $600 a year or so.

Probably because I live near many of the bay beaches. :dunno:

Interesting, I live between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, but we don't really get natural disasters here. The worst we often get are snowstorms.

I mean it is high because it is near the popular beaches of Baltimore. That was what our realtor told us.

Yeah. I just checked my policy to be sure. My homeowner's covers any extreme weather damange. Around here, we worry more about tornados than anything.

Wow, that's cheap! Our home insurance is about $1,500 per year.

Same goes for my parents' home insurance...about $600 a year. My brother's 2nd ex wife's home insurance is about $2,000 a year...she lives in Florida!

One time, the bathroom water tube was ruptured and leaked all over bathroom vinyl tile, hardwood floor in living room, and vinyl tile in washer room. My parents called their home insurance to fix bathroom water tube and replaced the floors with cermanic tiles. Their deducible was $500, but somehow, they credited $400 against the deductible, then my parents only paid $100 to get them replaced!!

We've had homeowners' insurance for over 31 years and never put in a claim. We have full coverage, including earthquake but we aren't eligible for flood.

Sounds like your insurance company did right by themselves! *Running away*

Well, it seems that everything is relatively A-Ok on the upper seaboard right now....

No I did not mean parks! I said people people are 'parking' their cars under
'trees' at my condo. And that is not too smart!

I would love to park my car under a dead tree which is ready to fall on it. I am sick of driving the tiny little car.

They pay you only book value for the destroyed car. Sorry.

Homeowner's insurance is based on the value of the home. So it's understandable that it's different in different areas, based on that area's home values. (Of course, there's other mitigating factors, such as risk and so forth.)
