tip or bribe?

some hotels I went to had a policy card in bathroom to be earth-friendly. I think that policy is for people who are staying there for more than 1 day. and they would replace all towels only for new patrons. :dunno:
That's always been the standard. I was referring to checking out.

If you stay more than one day, then put just the dirty towels on the floor each day.

When you check out, put them all on the floor.

If you need more you can always request fresh towels.

Hmmm. I've never tipped the maids before. Maybe I ought to make up for it and leave it all next time?

it's simply a courtesy - unwritten rule. A lot of foreigners don't tip because the tipping system doesn't exist in their countries however... I'm sure that most traveler books do mention the fact that we tip in America :)

Yes, they does, I have checked one of these books down here and sure enough, it is mentioned.

You don't have to tip anybody at airport except the luggage guy - the one at the drop-off/pick-up zone who gets the cart for you, loads the luggage and pushes the cart for you. feel free to tip him whatever the amount you like - typically $2-5. You may wish to not tip him - he does not expected you to tip him but IMO - that's rude :)

hotel - same thing with bellhop. and valets. you should always leave a tip for hotel cleaning maid after you check out - $2-5 is fine. You don't have to pull the bed sheets. They will replace it anyway. Most hotels have a policy in order to save water - if you leave the towels on floor - they will clean it. If you don't, they assume it's clean. Some people are germophobic so it is not uncommon for customers to request for a complete towels change (and even bed sheets) when they check in.

I was thinking in the back of my mind - a staff at the hotel (I forgot the name ) in NYC, whether helped or not with my luggage when I got off from the cab into the hotel. If it really did happen, I forgot to tip  It must be a foriegn side of me

Yeah, same when I saw in Japan - there is a sign at the hotel, if you rather keep the sheets, leave the note on the bed and the maid won't do it.

Hmmm, a great majority of the hotels in Las Vegas now charge a service fee so I wonder how they break it down and if they include Housekeeping. Ask next time I'm in Vegas, I guess....

a "service" fee? that's vague. I hate it when they trump up the charge by including bs vague fee in there. You should demand them to clarify it. FCC filed a lawsuit against telecommunication & tv companies for same practice.

It seems everyone has lame excuses to slap more fees on any services such as telecommunications, hotels and whatnot. Service fee? What "kind" of service?

I did ask a worker in LV last summer and he said it was for use of the exercise room, swimming pool, etc.....

ah... I see... how much was it?

holy crapo! that's a blatant rip-off

I know...that's the way it is in this economy....the World Expo people managed to get that waivedat their hotel headquarters for the deaf/hearing folks who used the right code when making reservations......

I believe it was 20 bucks a night.....
That's a rip off, to be honest - the use of these such rooms, should be included in the normal price of each night, not to top it off.

I know...it USED to be the norm...Jiro, I take that back, the hotel I stayed at did not charge this fee but when I was researching where to stay (I looked at about 100), I'd say about 80% say they charge this fee....

I just remembered the point I was driving at these last few posts....I'm wondering how much of these "service fees" Housekeeping gets....

that's why we leave a tip for them to take and keep it in their pockets because lot of managements frequently screw them.

Whoa, wait a minute....IF part of the fee goes to Housekeeping and we should still tip them because of some notion that they are being ripped off by their employer? Give me a break; I'm not going to tip twice......just in case.....

many employers do not pay minimum wage for maids/waitresses because of tips.

Yeah, I remember that. I had a word with the front people and said I did not book my room with the extra charge as I'm not going to use the gym and the like, so they had to waive it for me.
