tip or bribe?

For me, I have mixed feelings about tipping. I am generally a very good tipper, but I loathe giving a tip for really bad service. It's like telling whoever serviced you can get away with bad service because they still got $$ for it. I have never NOT tipped, but I give the bare minimum, that's it, in that kind of situation. We play at the casinos often and I am unbelievably generous after winning any hand at the poker tables (I play the cash tables.)

we should play. I remember giving $40-100 tips on the poker table that one night.. all night long... top notch service. The Bellagio remembers my by name these days so its good.

It has to be a very very very very bad service for me not to tip at all.

I agree - I was lucky enough not to expect any bad service when I was in U.S earlier this year.

I will tip most of the time but if someone has exceptionally bad attitude toward me because of my deafness or service was exceptionally bad, they get no tip at all. I don't think I've refused to tip people more than 3 times in the last five years.

One Japanese restruant had a very bad atitiude toward my deafness so they got no tip. One guy in Olive Garden kept getting me food I did not order at all so he got no tip either.

If I have truly bad service, I will leave a dime for a tip along with a note explaining why. At a restaurant, if it is the food, then I will mention something to the manager so he can then take it up with the kitchen. I don't generally get much bad service, but then again, I don't go out much anymore either.

funny thing is.. most deafies forget to tip but if service was bad i refuse to tip if they follow what i want to order then i will tip 5 dollars or higher like for same thing with nail salon when I have to get waxing done I don't have to call to set up appt up I can show up anytime and i tip the lady 5 dollars for doing good job on waxing.. :D it's fair cuz I don't go to nail salon that much cuz it cost me 20 dollars to do waxing on my face, eyebrows, upper lips even neck sheesh I go once every 3 weeks or every month cuz $$ problem cuz of work.. oh well :) but yeah that relates to people tipping high to whoever does good job.. :D if lousy service don't bother at all..

and my "normal" tip is about 20-25%

just like if you would tip at least $50 on any cheap bill?

Doesn't matter how cheap but say for example $8 bill, totally $58 bill (inlcuding $50 tip)...for good service?

just calculate the tip amount based on bills - 20-25%.

I do same. 15% is the minimum. For group - 18%. Today - we went to "Omelette Headquarter" near Boston for breakfast and the breakfast was omfgwtf. Real Egg, Real Bread, Real shit. Waitress was very nice because we're all deaf. Since the food was damn good and I was in good mood, I dropped 25% tip.

Same for yesterday (just 18%) even though the food was shit but the waitress was a very gracious host - all 8 deafies including me. I had a good time.

Yeah yeah, America...one of very few countries in the world that actually tips. But some of those examples seem to be bribery though. When I went to other country, it felt weird not to tip anyone for their service. lol

But I noticed, perhaps because of my family, tips become a bit bigger during x-mas season. Also that we tips good because some of family members worked as waitress. This brings us different perspective of how hard they work to get tips.

This is the second time I am attempting to post! :mad2:

Yeah, I agree with SWDog, that is a good reason to tip in a christmas season, becausse they work hard to deliver customers pressents for family and friends.

In Australia, there are few places that you can voluntarily tip, they just leave a jar at the front counter and let them tip on their own accord.

I had HORRIBLE service one time at a Denny's in NJ in the mid 90's. We had 13 people. Was made to wait almost an hour for a table. And right before we were seated another large group of people came in and were seated before us. Our food was late & cold. And we were afraid to send it back because we were SURE we would have had the food tampered with and sent back.
I took a penny put it under my coffee cup, in the saucer. We never went back to that Denny's. And since there was a gaming convention in that town twice a year we told all of our friends to boycott it too.

A bribe would be paid prior to receiving a service.

A tip would be paid after receiving a service.

i tip more than 10% because I try to help them in their budget where they are at. Also, Im tired of them saying that Deaf doesnt tip that much and its upset me. That reason why i tip more than 10% which it proved them wrong.
