Thoughts of a Deaf Child

Hah! My 4 year old daughter is just now saying "I don't care!" Uh oh.

No problem about the "partial bilingual" discussion. I think we've all been having some good, two way discussions lately on the CI forum together. Even Jillio and Cloggy are making us laugh these days with their "sexual tension". :laugh2:
Sorry. I can't help it...

Okay, back to the two essays: I almost fell apart when I read your comment, shel, and it's sad. You know, when I was a kid, my mother wanted me to attend the state deaf school Welcome to MSAD! Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf. but my dad said, "no, costs money" as if we were millionaries. We weren't. Far from it. All my dad was interested in was fishing and hunting. We never had a camper of our own to do that stuff and dad always took the Christmas money for hunting.

.

Public education doesn't cost the idvidual anything. To bad your dad didn't at least look into it. It's actually not bad as far as schools go, my yougest who has other special needs besides being hoh attends there.

I'm glad that I am not the only one that is pickin up on that. There is so much sexual tension between those two that you could cut it with a knife. :giggle::boink:

He's 11. I do move into his field of vision only to have him turn away again. Frustrating!!

When my son was younger, and I would be correcting him about something in sign--you know, telling him he knew he wasn't supposed to be doing this or that, etc.--he would close his eyes!!! Used to drive me up a wall! Looking back, its pretty funny!

That isn't exactly what I had considered cutting with a knife!

Yup. I'm HoH and mine won't let me learn to sign. They want me to be completely oral. :(

Geez...That's what I see a lot these days with these parents. It sucks that they would limit us like that. Also, many educators of the oral philosophy are like that too.

I am sorry that you are going through that. If you don't mind my asking, how old are you? Perhaps there is a way that you could learn it on your own. You don't have to use it with them, but you would at least be able to devleop the skills that would help you in other situations.

He mentioned in another thread that he is 15 years old. That has to be a tough on him.

And that's why we keep trying, huh, shel?

yeah that would be as bad as a hearing child covering his ears singing la la la la la la la la :giggle:

Yea but I get the feeling that we are not taken seriously or being mocked at. There is a serious problem out there with deaf ed and it seems like they dont believe us or what?

Maybe it's just normal child antics? Hearing children sometimes roll their eyes, say "whatever!", put their fingers in their ears and also may walk away and refuse to listen. A deaf child with hearing aids might do what I used to do, turn off my hearing aids! Do you feel that it's happening more than what you would consider to be normal?
It could be but this being my only deaf child I really don't know what is considered normal. He does interat a bit better with mom. To me it happens too much. I guess patience is a virtue eh??

Thanks, I missed that. Yeah, it has to be tough.....my heart breaks when I hear these stories. Unfortunately, there are way too many of them.
