'This is Alabama...We Speak English'....

Hence...

"If it's a federally-funded program..." in post #39 since that's the only reason why the lawsuit was brought up; the whole language thing shouldn't been an issue if it was state-funded.

Another case of where the federal government is funding more programs than they can afford; another case where the state believes that the federal money is theirs.

Therefore, it's better to have one language since that's what affordable now seeing that there is less money out there to expand multiple-language support.

So what should Alabama do then? Opt out of the federal funding for the DMV?

If the Federal govt doesn't have the money to expand the program then certainly it'd be in the govt best interest to shrink it down some. Allow some languages to be funded means you allow all. There is no money or resources that could possibly address that.

I think that mentioning even considering english only is crude and insensitive. This is a country formed and sustained by many different races and cultures. I think of all people, we, the Deaf community would be understanding of the idea of tolerance and acceptance of other language and cultures. To me, one of the most awesome things about America is its diversity.

I agree.

Ah, but the 1964 Act is preventing the Federal from being able to scale down.

So... Really, either Alabama have to accept the fact they don't have complete control over the federal funds entrusted to them, the Act has to be amended or repelled, or... opt out of the federal funding.

Making English the official language of the Union is another option, but that imposition would be violating state rights in choosing their own languages.

Adhering to a one language rule does not necessarily deprive others of their language or culture.

It is just political game, lol.

However, what happens when an illiterate person has to read a highway message?

I'm getting :dizzy: thinking about all the possibilities.

Don't they make the shapes of the signs different so that they can be distinguished just by shape? I.e. stop sign is octagonal, yield sign is triangular. At least that's what I heard.

As a group of people who often require ASL interpreters or other services to facilitate communication, Deaf/HH people should be the first to understand the difference having something in your native language/format can make.

Shapes, colors, pictures, and sometimes words. Pretty simple.

Not if they're notifying you of destinations and whereabout, which bridges are out of service, re-routes due to closed roada, traffic jams due to construction and so on. They usually have complex instructions that is hard to simpify.

Yeah, just English only signages that discriminate against 100 other languages.
