It's not as depressing to talk about something that happens halfway around the world to a government that has just as much ethnocentric expectations as us. It might have been an accident but we might be too ignorant to care unless it's suggested it would affect us.
I wonder how they (chinese) covered the Gulf Oil spill? And did they notice/care/worry about what would happen?
For us though... For example, you probably had people worried on the west coast about oily shrimp. For people like 50 miles from the gulf probably were more worried about it and then maybe the people who actually saw oiled shrimp or oil on their beaches weren't worried at all because thinking about it caused a perception of personal pain too great for them to handle, I.e. They actually changed their behavior and moved on.
