Double trouble, first off, welcome! Now I just have to ask, I am taking a shot in the dark with this, but your name is double trouble, which implies that you are 1 of 2. The family has multiple sets of twins, and you are "very, very close tothe family". So are you one of the twins in the family?
I'm just curious.
I never even thought of that, but sadly, no I am not one of the twins. I just picked the name cause it implies more than enoough trouble. Great guess, though!
I really don't remember how the subject of bi-lateral came up, I'll have to ask But I do know that Peter gave his father the arguement that he wanted to "hear " out of both of his ears. (who could argue that point with a 5 year old?) He also told us that when he is hooked up to his cd player, he was unable to hear anything else. With bi-lateral, he is able to hear was is going on around him , as well as listen to his music.
The bi-lateral has saved him! Approximately a year after his 2nd implantation, his original device failed Although they did the surgery fairly quickly, it took a very long time for him to relarn how to use the ear. Thank God he had his newly implanted left ear to rely on, and he never missed a beat in school. It was like a "back up" device for him.
After that episode, once both ears were working up to "normal speed", his test scores jumped dramatically. I don't know the particulars, but I can find out.
As far as his speech, not really sure. He has always had great speech- it was never even an issue for him. His speech therapy constists of language lessons, not the actual pronouncation. But I am told that with the new Freedom BTE's , speech is supposed to be even more clearer (if that is possible!)
I hope I have answered all of your questions! Thanks for having me!
