The Xbox One (yes, that is the name)

I could keep Xbox 360 to play the games that Xbox One refused to run UNTIL it RRODed. What if Microsoft discontinued Xbox 360s in favor of the new console?

It depends on how long they continue to offer repairs and support for the 360, too. I don't agree with all your old XBLA games suddenly becoming worthless either (I have quite a lot of them)

Yes it a gamble that Microsoft trying to cash in on used game or get rid of it all together.

It can go bad for Xbox One that it may die out and fails in market place.

But .................

Microsoft gambled on Windows OSes and Internet Explorer ....

Look where Microsoft is at now days ......

I think it the wrong path to try to kill used gaming industry or gaming rental market place. I believe that going to effect the gaming industry greatly.

Because used or rental gaming industry does help Microsoft sell more Xbox 360 when used or rental games will work on it. I believe if they kill that and they will kill console box sales along with it.

It is history repeating itself, somewhat. Remember the 3DO? It was also trying to be all things to all people, the ultimate box for your TV, it did games! Music! PHOTO CDs (well, it was 1993) Video CDs! It was a great idea, but it cost too much (much like the rumour MSRP of the Xbox VHS) and so it died.

For another thing, both 3DO and MS are making the same mistake of touting the non-game functions over the games... on a game system! From Wikipedia: "For a significant period of the product's life cycle, 3DO's official stance on pricing was that the 3DO was not a video game console, rather a high-end audio-visual system and was priced accordingly, so no price adjustment was needed. Despite this, the promised "early adopters" never showed up to purchase mass quantities of games." I can see the same thing happening here. I don't care about all the extra shit the Xbox does, if it plays crappy games or costs too much because of the extra shit!

Worth noting that the 3DO was the idea of Trip Hawkins, who was a founder of EA.

Xbox One preowned plan revealed? - GameSpot.com

$52 to activate the used games.

What's stupid move, M$.

What if PS4 cost you $100 to activate the used game? Let's just wait and see what PS4 have to offer on June 10th. :cool2:

I agree, $52 is ridiculous, better to buy a new one instead.

GameStop will be all happy to increase the sales fee, for example $52, GameStop will add store fee of $5 to make it $57, and they will buy your game cheaper than sale value- big time RIP OFF. I would buy games through craigslist.

$100? Very unlikely. Sony said gamers are allowed to play used games, whatever they like.

On Xbox One, you have pay $52 fee to M$ to unlock your game - Gamestop won't get anything.

That's what they'd rather you did anyway!

That article seems to suggest that they'll need to be registered with MS to register/deregister each copy of a game as having been traded in or sold to a new owner... something a dude on Craigslist won't be able to do.

However, he might be able to chip your Xbox to play copied games (they will figure it out, they always do), and given MS wants you to pay a subscription fee to endure homophobic and racist abuse from 12 year olds as well as teamkillers and griefers, you're not really missing out on much by having a permanently offline chipped Xbox.

Gamestop make pure profits from used games, NEVER give a cut to the publishers/developers who own the rights to the IPs. It made sense that Microsoft is willing to help them get little profits from used games. This is why MS try to make Xbox One more attraction than other next-generation consoles. Many publishers/developers lost good amount of profits to used games and ended up in worst fate such as lay-offs or bankrupt.
Buy a used game from GameStop, all money goes to the company, not to whom owned and made it.
I only pre-order or buy new games if I want to support them, not GameStop.

Used games AREN'T same as used cars. Go figure it out.

I don't think used games are larger portion that bankrupted the game companies.

I believe it has with management of companies.

Yes. Companies depend on the sales of video games to keep going with video game business. If their new games sell poor, they have to make decisions on a sequel's fate or let some workers go. Some buyers won't buy them in full prices, just want few dollars saved in used games. Unfortunate for them, they didn't aware of GameStop won't give share of profits on used games to publishers/developers while GameStop continue rip-off their trade-in customers.

I wonder why used video games are called 'used' although they are only discs with game program stored inside?

I sold some used games that are much cheaper than Gamestop used game price - $55 but I chose to set at $30.

Don't forget about GameFly - biggest game rentals and Best Buy/Walmart - they have used game program.

Used means you already use it and resell to others.

I didn't buy any used games anymore after I received used game from Amazon and smelled like crack on it so I just dumped in university restroom because of not want deal with LEO accusation of me. What ignorant and abusive sellers.

What about share games - some friends share games. It will going be HARD on them because of M$, game publishers and retail.

After PS4, Xbox One (X1) and Wii U become mainstream so I believe some Gamestop stores will close, or become much smaller store or go out of business in worst case - same with Gamefly. Some publishers or non-indie developers may go bankrupt as game selection will be less than Xbox 360/PS3 era, however we may see a larger selection of indie games.

Small devs might well be pushed to the PC or into being actual indies. Being indie doesn't mean a crappy (looking) game unless you choose to make it that way: look at stuff like Strike Suit Zero on Steam, it looks almost like a AAA game just based on the screenshots.

Sony might stand to benefit from this, they're making a huge effort to make it easy for indie devs to publish stuff on PSN. MS by contrast are notoriously hard to deal with, expensive, and getting your product into their precious walled garden isn't even a guarantee of success nor support. There's bugs in Fez, for example, that'll never be fixed because the devs just can't/won't spare the cash to have a patch certified by MS.
