Well, since she already had a couple of multiple births in addition to two single births, they should have cut her off after baby #6. Enough is enough, since bigger multiple births carries a huge risk.

I hope that in light of this, that fertility clinics will adopt a strict policy regarding the number of embyros to be implanted, and that they will adopt a strict policy on the number of babies that have been born to each mother. Once they reach the limit, they are done, and they should be refused further fertility treatment. They should have cut this woman off after baby #6.

It should be advised for women not to carry several babies as it can endanger their lives so I think the decision should be based on that factor.

Yeah. Look at the Duggar family. Their children are healthy and do not have lifelong complications, because most of them were single births, with the occasional twins.

But carrying 8 babies all at once, like this woman, causes severe lifelong complications. The babies will always have medical problems resulting from this.

The more babies there are, the chances increase...why take that chance?

Yeah, that becomes as issue as well. Doctors take an oath to first of all, do no harm. This type of multiple birth that we are discussing could be easily seen as a violation of that, particularly if these poor babies end up brain damaged or otherwise have serious health issues that affect them for life.

However, should a woman become pregnant naturally with 8 fetuses, then they would be obligated also to do beneficence, which means what is the most benefit to the patient. However, there has never been a documented case of octuplets conceived naturally, and only one other conceived with fertility treatments.

But to answer the original question, in my opinion, a woman can have as many children as she wants provided she is capable of supporting them and providing a home for them. In this case, the woman cannot support the 6 she had prior without receiving public assistance. Adding 8 more to the dole, especially considering the fact that taxpayers will now be picking up the neonatal medical costs at $250,000 a day per baby, it is time for someone to step in.

Chances are much greater that they will than chances that they won't. They are already racking up 1/4 million a day in medical costs.

We should always assume that there is a large risk of lifelong medical problems in multiple births. And with single premmie births, there is usually a risk, but not as severe as multiple births. I was a premature baby, and I have several medical problems resulting from being a premature.

And these babies are not only multiples, they are extremely premature. All but one is on a respirator. Also, the birth weight is a huge factor...even a bigger factor than gestational age. They are all very, very small. And let's not forget that some of the heroic measures taken to keep them alive can also result in health problems that last a lifetime.
