Boston boy dies of carbon monoxide in running car By Associated Press BOSTON (AP) — The Boston fire department says an 11-year-old boy has died of carbon monoxide poisoning after being overcome as he sat in a running car to keep warm.

Boston fire spokesman Steve MacDonald said the boy was helping his father shovel out their car in the Dorchester neighborhood Saturday morning. The boy got cold after they had cleared the passenger side. The father then started the engine and the boy got inside the car.

MacDonald said the car's exhaust was covered by a large snow bank, and the boy was overcome by fumes around 11:40 a.m.

MacDonald said neighbors, firefighters and EMT's worked to revive the boy, but he was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center.

The father went into respiratory arrest and also was taken to the hospital.

That's too bad. People don't realize the fumes have to go somewhere.

After I cleared out my driveway this morning, I made it a point to dig out the vent for the dryer that protrudes through my basement window(snow is piled to the first floor windows).

Are you well stocked on food, water, household supplies, meds, gas in the car, and batteries? Do you have any elderly neighbors you need to check on?

Other than that, I hope you stay cozy indoors for a couple days. :)

My brother lives in Connecticut, so he might get some of the storm, too. He recently broke his right elbow, and since he lives alone everything is more of a hassle to do until it heals. No snow shoveling for him!

I checked on my elderly neighbor to see if she needed anything from the store. My city is having a on street parking ban for two days and they want people to stay off the road Sunday too. I have a bone bone spur in my right
shoulder so it is hard to do a lot shoveling . A broken eblow sound very painful.

I dont remember what year was it but we lived there around that time we lived on the top next to roof on the row. The snow were alll over our windows that was next to roof.

Just don't know how you guys do it living in all that snow and so cold....I can deal with the Heat but not the Cold....

Haven't had to use our Central Heat this winter at all...unusually very mild winter in Florida.

While my favorite season is summer, I can't deny that living in New England gives me the opportunity to sample every season. I often marvel at how the Native Americans handled winter. If we get an average year, it is 50's in spring and fall which is very bearable. The changing of the leaves, a light snow at Xmas, the changing of plant life in spring, you can't get anything like that in any other place on the planet.

True, we have rough weather, but the same is true for the Caribbean. Beauty does not come without risk.

What about sandy victims? They are far worse than this one, I mean seriously far far worse. How many houses have been destroyed in this blizzard? How many homes have been destroyed in the path of Sandy?

My POV is that no matter where you live, you will always have disaster one point or other, For instance if you live on eastern coast, your gonna deal with deadly hurricane from time to time, If you live in middle of Kansas, hope that tornado does not hit your house and sweep it away. I deal with Blizzard all the time, I am NorthEaster myself, and have seen the worst of blizzard. Of course, there are fewer deaths and less damage than other kinds of storm and whats nice thing about Blizzard is that clean up is not as much as hurricane or Tornado causes mess. My street is already plowed done, and already cleared to drive around, it takes them less than half an hour to complete in my area, if it is flooded Im stuck on my house roof and wait for flood to go away and it may take days days for them to go away and damage to all of my drywall with flood, Blizzard don't cause that.

Bet you, in about few days, everything will be back normal, while those that affected by Sandy still not finish with their clean up. Scary storm sandy!

we're not talking about blizzard or a wussy storm. nor'easter is no funny business.

so far.... 1 dead and 500,000 people without power... 4-5 inches of snow per hour... that's very serious.

Wrong? 29 people killed in blizzard, alright, how many got killed in last great Hurricane? Maybe for you, one is just too much and I can take that. But I am talking about big picture.

Do I have to remind you again? Here in Rochester, we had 4 foot snow back then and there is not a single news about roof collapsed! 2 feet is not going to cause cave in. The only time I heard roof collapsed was in Alaska with 8 foot snow, and that was flat roof. You have to remember, the slope type roof holds snow much better than flat roof, how many homes that got flat roof? Not many!

Man! I remember that blizzard of '77 and I really had blast time, well I was 12 years old that time. Going out sledding, wow! A lot good memories.

Wrong! The wind can be as strong as a hurricane and the weight of over two ft of snow on a roof and cause the roof to fall in on people. USATODAY.com

Smithtown Fire officials responded to the Smithtown Lanes bowling alley for a partial roof collapse, a natural gas leak and a significant water leak.

Heavy snow appears to have contributed to a partial roof collapse Saturday at a Smithtown bowling alley, Suffolk police said.

There was no one inside Smithtown Lanes, 200 Landing Ave., at the time of the collapse, according to police.

Police and the Smithtown Fire Department responded about 4:30 p.m. to a call about a center portion of the roof collapsing. Suffolk Water Authority workers also were summoned to shut down a water leak, police said.

The fire marshal was at the scene Saturday night, investigating the structural integrity of the rest of the roof.

Fire Department officials were not immediately available for comment. Smithtown received 27 inches of snow in the blizzard, according to the National Weather Service.

Please see post #33... Do I have to remind you again that I *ALMOST* never heard of roof collapse from blizzard as comparing to Hurricane where I can guarantee you at LEAST FEW the whole house would be gone by right after hurricane received a farewell to that poor area, also depends on engineering flaws.

I am sure some of you recall a house in Texas where hurricane Katrina wiped out entire rows of homes except one that stand intact and undamaged. I don't recall single Blizzard has the capacity to do such damages in that magnitude (Huge sized) like these photos in this link

Damn, I wish my front door would be like that! I never seen like that in real life. Of course, it is not fake as far as I am concerned
