This is baiting because I can no more sum up Jesus in one posting (or one thread) than I could sum up my life in one posting. I think you take a simplistic view of the Bible. It's not intended to be a historical record. It's intended to convey to you through stories and examples of how you should live your life. There are people here in AD that follow many of the rules set in the bible but do not practice Christianity. I think that should tell you something fundamental about the roll that the bible has played in our history and the shaping of our societies. This is why you should "bother".
Perhaps so, you can have a short or a long posting to sum up your life. Again, it can be done.
The Bible is a historical document, both the OT and NT. It is intended to be a historical record because it *IS* a historical document to begin with. When producing stories also means talking about what happened historically, a time when towns, events and people existed and transpired, especially Jesus Christ and His teachings. Archaeology has substantiated many of the Bible's historical accuracy. At the same time, it's quite apparent that the Bible is also intended to help people with their lives and how to live their life, and to seek their salvation. I'd say that for you to say that the Bible is not intended to be a historical record shows a far more simplistic understanding the role of what the Bible is about.
