Oh I see what you mean. Wow, the fluid is inside the cochlear. I get the picture of what you said. Another in my mind, just like inserting a wire in it which causes a virtually massive wave that destroys the cilia - but not a good example, but an ideal.

yes, your example is similar to what happens when electrodes are placed in the cochlea (since electrodes are wires). :)

I see. Thanks for the replies to my question, Jiro and Hear Again. I understood it perfectly.

Hope you guys have a great Xmas

I wonder if that would affect my candidacy. I have a cochlear variant of meniere's disease. This means that I often have too much fluid in my cochlea. The little canal between the cochlea and the balance canals is too narrow to keep the fluid properly balanced. But it seems to me, if a cochlear implant gets rid of the fluid, that would also cure meniere's disease at the same time. Of course, I might not understand this fully.

it won't make a difference one way or the other since fluid is removed from the cochlea when ci electrodes are inserted. there are alot of people with meniere's who have ci's, but you must have a functioning auditory nerve. as for ci's "curing" meniere's, i don't know if they do that, but i do know many people have reported a decrease or elimination in/of their vertigo or dizziness.

Hmm, maybe I should go back to the doctor and ask him for a test to confirm his suspicion that I have no functional auditory nerve since it seems to me that I wouldn't be able to hear anything if it was disrupted. Of course, as far as I know with my limited understanding of how nerves function, there may be variations in degree of functionality, and I would need full function of it.

if you're interested in talking to a doctor about this, i would recommend seeing a ci surgeon who has experience with meniere's and auditory nerve function.
it might not hurt to be evaluated. after all, you don't have to commit to surgery if you are deemed a candidate.

Well that explains it! I've been seeing the wrong kind of doctors! Audiologists can tell you how good your hearing is at the moment they test you, but they just guess at everything else.
