Text Telephones (TTY)

Relay online or VRS being down during a power outage may be true, but the discussion in this thread is about TTYs and whether they're obsolete. Everyone's using cell phones (Sidekicks and Blackberrys, etc.) now and you can still use your cell phone during any power outage (provided the cell towers aren't in overload as can happen when power is out) so you'd still have access to a Relay.

also in power outage the cell phone tower did getting a power generator to operate cell tower to stay connected if the generator is broke down or ran out of gas you will not able to reach the cellular signal until the cell phone techician will do repair or refill the fuel to enable the signal back on again. when the electric company will restore the power and generator will be stand-by until another power outage in the future.

If you need to recharge for your cell phone during power outage you can get cigarette lighter to charge your cell phone in the car or the portable power station has cigarette lighter outlet or you can get solar power to recharge for your cell phone's battery

Some large commerical generator system runs on natural gas fuel on generator's engine in hospital, senior housings and etc.

On a side note, I used this device connected to my cell phone. It enabled me to communicate anywhere. I've since use a CI now.

holy shit you've gotta be kidding me!!!!! I didn't know 1st TTY machine was THAT big. In fact, I thought the first TTY machine was that 2nd one. good to know...

Some of my deaf friends keep their landline TTYs because they need a way to communicate when their VPs don't work, or the electricity is out.

I keep mine because some friends still call me on TTY.
what about Little device as such BB, SK, others if VP doesn't work or eletricity is out..? ;)

And Microsoft Office Live Meeting.

More on this link: Microsoft NetMeeting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and it also includes a link for you to download a NetMeeting for your Vista.

For Vista Business Edition or Ultimate Edition can support with MS NetMeeting Software... but Vista Home or Premium does not support with MS NetMeeting

Windows 98, Windows ME,2000 and XP Home & Professional & MCE still support with MS NetMeeting

Sorenson EnVision did use MS NetMeeting

Some of my friends can't afford pagers/phones. :(
One Problem --- Some TTY user can not afford Long Distance calls thorugh Landline telephone to call to someone.

pagers can do unlimited use thorugh Instant Messaging at flat rate.

I was quit Bellsouth landline with Traditional TTY in 2003. I was began using a pager since 2003 to now.

I was used AOL Mobile Communicator Pager then I was got OGO by AT&T Wireless (was mergered to Cingular) then I got finally got Blackberry 7290 by T-Mobile/GoAmerica then Now, I have currently using Blackberry Pearl 8100 with T-Mobile. when my contract will be expire by next year. I will switch to Sprint and I will get Blackberry 8830 Worldwide Edition.

My friends don't make many long distance TTY calls. They only use the TTY when the VP isn't working.

TTYs may be "out of date" for sighted deaf people who use videophones or internet relay, but for deafblind people, they are still the best and in some cases, the only accessible, option.

TTYs are, as stated before, being replaced with videophones and internet relay. Video relay especially, because it's in a native signer's natural language and as such, much faster than typing back and forth. For us deafblind people, we're trying to get deafblind relay. A relay company has petitioned the FCC for funding, and hopefully, something good will come of that. DeafBlind Relay would involve real-live interpreters being dispatched to your home or work to facilitate phone calls in things like tactile sign, close up sign, or tactile/close up speechreading.

I don't ever use "tty terms" when typing- I personally think it's rude. You're not going to save a mile's worth of time by shortening a handful of words. If anything, it's confusing.

Heh. Sighted TTYs aren't really that expensive- you could get a good one for, give or take, 300$. If you're lucky, you live in a state where there's a loan or funding program, and it's free or very cheap. On the other hand, TTY for the deafblind is EXPENSIVE. The most popular and supported TTY for the deafblind is probably the "pacmate" note-taker with the company's own "FSTTY" software/hardware package. For the note taker, tty hardware, and software with 40 cells of braille it costs 6,795$. For 20 cells of braille, it's 4995. Yes, for a tty.

TTY is on it's way out, pretty much. With the ever-popular use of video relay and the introduction of deafblind relay service, the few deaf people who keep TTYs generally don't use them all that often- they're slower, clunkier, and they aren't in a language many of us are comfortable with.

Yes... My braille TTY Was a ridiculous price, for a 20 cell one.

I also have a braille display for my PC (similar to the pacmate you mentioned) but it is only 8 cells! And still cost a lot. (not nearly as much as my full TTY machine, but still over $1000)

And I hope they do not do away with TTY completely... I could probably manage text on a cell phone, but it would be -extremely- tedious... and video is out, for me. I can hardly see signs in person, on video, forget it.
