Text Telephones (TTY)

It really depends on whether a hard-of-hearing knows American Sign Language or not, so if I were you, I won't jump into conclusion that videophones replaces TTYs. If it were for those who are deaf/hard-of-hearing who know sign language and if you forget about the power outage, then yes--videophones will replace TTYs (if only if there's a cellular video phone available that takes the place of power outage).

I spoke with FLA relay about during power outage and relay service. They replies that FLA relay service still operation during power outage, will work only with TTY, nothing else.

So, either relay online or VRS are down.

Nope, we don't even have these VP -100 either, in australia, we have these Ojo VP's, they're very expensive to purchase and rarely found in stores unfortunately. Deaf people, like us, can't afford it. BUt to be honest here, not one person in Australia has a VP -- well, only a few, not that many.

What's wrong with use webcam and NetMeeting as long as you're on high-speed?

Relay online or VRS being down during a power outage may be true, but the discussion in this thread is about TTYs and whether they're obsolete. Everyone's using cell phones (Sidekicks and Blackberrys, etc.) now and you can still use your cell phone during any power outage (provided the cell towers aren't in overload as can happen when power is out) so you'd still have access to a Relay.

I don't have Netmeeting, but I use ooVoo which is good, yet again, but I haven't used it for a long time and my webcam's broken.

Windows XP come with NetMeeting. Unless you're on Mac?

how unfortunately
hopefully, you able to use netmeeting at home and call some of your friend anywhere on Earth.

I will keep that in mind, as the least my webcam is trashed. Didn't you know!?

TTYs may be "out of date" for sighted deaf people who use videophones or internet relay, but for deafblind people, they are still the best and in some cases, the only accessible, option.

TTYs are, as stated before, being replaced with videophones and internet relay. Video relay especially, because it's in a native signer's natural language and as such, much faster than typing back and forth. For us deafblind people, we're trying to get deafblind relay. A relay company has petitioned the FCC for funding, and hopefully, something good will come of that. DeafBlind Relay would involve real-live interpreters being dispatched to your home or work to facilitate phone calls in things like tactile sign, close up sign, or tactile/close up speechreading.

I don't ever use "tty terms" when typing- I personally think it's rude. You're not going to save a mile's worth of time by shortening a handful of words. If anything, it's confusing.

Heh. Sighted TTYs aren't really that expensive- you could get a good one for, give or take, 300$. If you're lucky, you live in a state where there's a loan or funding program, and it's free or very cheap. On the other hand, TTY for the deafblind is EXPENSIVE. The most popular and supported TTY for the deafblind is probably the "pacmate" note-taker with the company's own "FSTTY" software/hardware package. For the note taker, tty hardware, and software with 40 cells of braille it costs 6,795$. For 20 cells of braille, it's 4995. Yes, for a tty.

TTY is on it's way out, pretty much. With the ever-popular use of video relay and the introduction of deafblind relay service, the few deaf people who keep TTYs generally don't use them all that often- they're slower, clunkier, and they aren't in a language many of us are comfortable with.

so, are you telling us that most deaf who use VP have no skill on typing? Slow and painful. argh...

personally, that's problem and ASL is their best solution to speed up on the communicate that I can understand.

if your friend is stubborn to have tty at home and you dont have tty at home, you can use Pager relay on your mobile or pc to call your friend. :) i have that link on my mobile in case.

I use Viable Vision now :) NetMeeting doesn't exist under Windows Vista but they are called as Windows Meeting Space Weird, huh?

if in event of power outage, you can get battery (portable power station) and power inverter to power cable modem and VP and small LCD TV 9" 25 watt (energystar) but Some Cable company did use emergency Generator during power outage.
Or you can get gasoline generator with an long power plug line during power outage

Some of my deaf friends keep their landline TTYs because they need a way to communicate when their VPs don't work, or the electricity is out.

I keep mine because some friends still call me on TTY.
