I'm curious about your opinion on Taxi drivers....I keep hearing that they say that Taxi drivers are professional drivers, but I disagree. Many of them are the worst drivers than we are. I have too many problems with their driving skills around me when I'm driving.

I created a poll to see if you think they're professional drivers or not.

They are road demons. We have taxi drivers here and a lot of them are reckless drivers if you ask me. The thing is, people are motivated to move around fast to get better tips from the customers.

I'm not talking about them in general, but there's a good number of taxi drivers who shouldn't be driving.

Oh hell no! They are not!!! They drive like manic!!!! The Taxi almost hit me few times! UGH! Even I rode in the taxi and I get soooooooo nervous! So will may not take taxi ever again! UNLESS I have no choice, then I will have to.

I vote no...I dont know what you mean by professional drivers? Are professional drivers people who drive buses, semi-trucks or race cars?

Yes also police who drive the cruisers, too.

Yes, these taxi drivers are Professional drivers !!
I m very impressed with them especially
in NYC lots of heavy traffic they're so fast & smooth
just like Dick Tracy type with yellow hat and wristwatch.

They have been doing it every day long hours
so thats why I consider them "Professional Drivers"

NYC taxi drivers are NOT quite the same as
these taxi drivers at other cities such as Seattle, etc.

Hey, Have you ever seen any taxicabs into accidents
in NYC ? Never. :D

I don't live in NYC, though I've seen a few Taxi cabs get in accident before around here.

I guess they are more strict on hiring people to drive taxis in NYC.

Do Taxi drivers need a certification to drive a taxi? If not, then I dont consider them professional drivers. I really do not know that much about the business of driving so my opinion may not be valuable. LOL!

Me neither, I have no idea how the hiring process works when getting a job as a taxi driver.

I've seen Immigration peoples are tend hiring by taxi companies which it's cheaper...

Few of them are freckling accidents.

From what I know, in major cities... you do need a permit to be a taxi driver. They call it the 'Hack' card and I imagine it isn't difficult to obtain especially when a large amount of the taxi drivers are immigrants.

(Not trying to be biased, but it's common knowledge that taxi drivers in major cities are often immigrants, either legal or illegal.)

I looked at the NYC taxi driver requirements on line. They have to attend taxi driver school, fill out lots of forms, get fingerprinted and drug tested, prove they don't owe child support, pass a written test and an English proficiency test, take a defensive driving course, pass a medical exam, have a good driving record, have a valid chauffer's license, and pay fees. Then, they get a one-year probationary license.

ahh...then that changes things, huh?

NYC taxi drivers got into accident. I saw it on the news. They arent so perfect.

I sometimes feel safe, sometimes not. BUT they drive proper and respect the customers. I had no plm with it.

Yeah I undy...
I recalled my mom (from Brooklyn) told me
some true stories long time ago that every time
if she choose NYC taxi driver, then (she
was a very Platinum Blonde & Beautiful Model) she MUST
talk like a real Tough NYC woman with NYC accent
acting like she knows where she is going etc...
Because years ago these taxi cab drivers used to
take advantage of you IF they find out that
you do NOT know where you are going then
they will take a much longer path just
to collect more $$ on more miles.
So thats why she had to be very alert and
acting Tough & Wise.

HELLLLLLL NO WAY

We re vacation to Reno, NV... We load stuffed suit bags and other bags in Taxi's truck and inside car! But No room for my two Persian cats in one small flying Carriage.. Taxi man offer my cat s cage in truck with open because we hold our two daughters plus our two dogs full inside the car. Seem He don't want put it in his front passage? But I was so F*&*&*&CCCKK pissed off that he drove F^%$CK fast! I was panic and My hubby try calms me down because he is not wild over my cats! arrive to another motel. My cats were safe and still in truck! GRRRRRRRRR Hate TAXI :giggle:

Taxi Drivers varies from cities to cities just as much as a regular driver does varies from cities to cities. It is basically how they are taught to drive, so and on.

Personally, I have not had a bad experience with a taxi driver yet but I do remember when I was living in D.C., The taxi drivers were pretty much fast but didn't have a close call though.

No way, most of taxi drivers aren't perfect and some of them got accident too.

I believe taxi drivers *are* considered professional drivers in other countries, but certainly not in the U.S. As someone who is deafblind, I take taxis often and let me tell you, many of the drivers I had could stand to take a refresher course in Driver's Ed. :) Some of them drive way too fast and to make matters worse, they do it while talking on their cell phone! This is a topic for another thread, but some drivers in my area speak very little English, so they call up their friends so they can be given directions to the customer's destination. I'm afraid that here in the U.S., taxi drivers are considered *anything* but professional.
