So, will the deaf culture be there?

faire, joure, I just realized what you don't understand.
The AVT theory holds that hoh kids are "more hearing then deaf"
In a decible sense that is true. I (and most other hoh) can experiance sound the way a deaf person doesn't. But at the same time, just b/c we can hear it doesn't mean we can experiance sound the way a hearing person does. Yes, some hoh kids are "almost hearing"...but at the same time you really can't generalize that hoh listening levels= being more Hearing then Deaf. Being hoh is a MIX of being Hearing and Deaf. We may love listening to music, or be able to interact with the hearing world.....but at the same time, our hearing aids/CIs DO NOT grant us equal access in the hearing world! Even the best hearing aids/CIs cannot give us 100% access to the hearing world.
Just b/c we can hear somewhat with heairng aids/CIs, it doesn't mean that we've not got a hearing loss, and that we can't be Sighted/use ASL!
A hoh kid can be "almost hearing" yes....but many hoh kids can also be "almost deaf" too.

I get it. My daughter had a 65 db loss and had NO access to spoken language. She behaved as if she was profoundly deaf. She could not understand more than a few, extremely familiar words in conjunction with lipreading. But the difference with the CI is night and day. She does have access to 100% of spoken language. She UNDERSTANDS speech (not just hears tones) at 15 db. That is a quiet whisper. And you know what, almost ALL CI kids get the same kind of benefit.

You are bragging about how wonderful the CI done for your daughter. Umf. Good Grief.

Well, I think she does have that right. I know I have said many times myself how much I like and count on my HAs.

Even though not all of us agree with FJ, I would not knock her for being proud of what her daughter has accomplished thus far.

where's the love? if everybody can do ASL, it's all good then.

i see a conflict of cultures.

I see someone who is EXTREMELY old school and has never seen or had experience with the new technology and so can not believe or understand or imagine the reality I am talking about. And since it is beyond their capacity to understand, they don't bother to look into it further and make broad, sweeping, UNTRUE statements about it, because the statements reflect what they have personally experienced, rather than the reality of the situation.

Then why bother responding?

Technology doesn't replace natural hearing. But anyway, I don't think being old school is the issue. Or how advanced technologies is. Did you really think our problem is about not hearing enough due to bad experience in the past?

No, the point I was making was that she makes sweeping statements like "deaf kids can NOT listen" or "Faire_joure"s daughter can only understand familiar words" or "it is impossible for kids with CI's to hear and understand with only listening" and that is crap. SHE can not understand through listening, and she can not imagine that other deaf people can. That is blantantly untrue.

I don't know, but saying "ALL" child can hear above 15 db is pretty ignorance itself. We don't know that.

from my perspective, I don't see Bebonang as ignorant. I think both FJ and she are coming at it from very different angles.
I agree with Frisky and Jiro.

you made the impression that just about all kids hear above 15 db. we don't know that.

Again, that isn't close to what I said. BUT, with CI's audiologists aim for the child to hear better than 30 db across all frequencies, and that means that all sounds in the English language should be audible to them.

I think maybe deafgal meant she thinks you are not taking into consideration the deaf children who are not eligible for CI. :dunno:

nope, I think FJ knows what I'm referring to. I've read plenty of blogs where parents are frustrated that they can't get their child implant above 30 db or above 20 db
