But boys carry backpacks.

True, but a number of schools have already banned backpacks for all students. At the very least, they are made to leave them in their lockers. I don't agree with banning purses--just offering an explanation for Liebling's question.

I'm not certain Liebling, but with the school shootings that have happened in the U.S. recently, I would think it is because no one could get a gun in a small wallet, but they could hid a gun in a purse.

But they could hide a gun in their socks, underwear, bra, or in their own pockets....

Edit Oh I just thought of something here, if that the case of why, is the school providing free sani supplies in the girls' restrooms?...:hmm:

I know that some schools require clear plastic backpacks.

Of course, that wouldn't be a solution for girls to carry "private" things.

Leaving backpacks in their lockers won't work for the girls either.

Not at my school, it does allow us to carrying backpack in classrooms in anytime and some students don't like to store some stuff in locker, it was their personal.

That's new to me but haven't hear about any school require clear backpack but it seems common in southeast usa, is it right?

Some girls carry small purses inside their big backpacks. They don't want to carry a huge backpack into the bathroom. Sometimes the school restrooms don't have places to hang them.

A restroom full of girls with big backpacks gets crowded real quick. :P

True unless they have lockers to put them in safe place but alot schools does not have lockers so where does it leaves them with books and private stuffs?

Wow they can afford to fix lockers every year, this is one reason they remove lockers from school property because it costed them so much money to replace damaged ones so instead they make kids to carry books with them to every classes all day and let them use backpack to carry books.

I don't know any schools in this area that require clear bags but I've read about it in other places.
Why Clear Backpacks?

More and more school districts are requiring their students to carry see-through bookbags and backpacks. They are following the lead of retailers (Dillards, Foley's, Mervyn's, Walgreens, etc.), hospitals, sports venues, high-tech companies, prisons, bus companies, nursing homes and others that require their employees to have clear backpacks.. .

Clear Backpacks and School Safety

Clear backpacks are not only a fashion statement, they also promote school safety! Even though the first schools to require clear backpacks did so in 1998, a number of these schools are already showing positive results. School districts that have mandated clear backpacks, in our preliminary research, report a 50% drop in expulsions due to weapons and drugs. These numbers are further enhanced when schools concurrently adopt a Standardized Dress policy. Notes from a long-term study of school uniforms in Long Beach, CA are available at www.lbusd.k12.ca.us/uniform/uniform.htm .

In addition to decreasing the number of 'dangerous' articles, schools studied also reported a drop (as much as 80%) in the number of 'distracting' items brought to school, such as GameBoys, pagers, Walkmans and Pokemon Cards. Two factors cause clear backpacks to be effective. First, they allow students and teachers to see what other students are carrying, which increases the reporting rates for contraband. Secondly, it deters would-be carriers from making the attempt, since they know there is no place to easily hide their contraband. Since 50% of weapons brought onto school campuses are carried for 'show-and-tell' purposes, the prospect of being found out makes would-be student perpetrators think twice!

See-Through backpacks are currently required in various schools in 35 states. As a company we have received inquiries from all 50 states and have shipped bags to more than 40 states? so far!

well .. look at now days.. drugs/ weapons.. whats wrong with backpack.. and.. put purse at home.. or in locker.. not carry around.. educations come first than think self..

I agree with you.

However, it doesn't have to be a purse that the girls have to carry their "personal things" in... but also in their school bags. They can always have a small bag designed for those "personal things" that can fit in their school bags. That way, they simply take that small bag instead of a whole purse.

When I am in class, I can often tell if a woman is leaving to do her "personal thing" in the bathroom... if she leaves the classroom with her purse. Before you say, "All women do that..." that's not entirely true. I've seen women leave the classroom without their purses... just because they simply need to use the bathroom, not for her "personal thing". :)

Well, they should provide some tampons or pads inside the box in the bathroom the female students could purchase it, if they need it. It would cost about 10 to 25 cent per each tampon or pad. More privacy this way, if they ban the purses to carry to school.

At first I'm  after read your post about "hid a gun in a purse" because purse size is the same as male wallet. I'm sure that it's handbag, you talking about. I beleive that we misunderstand between American and British language... about "purse" until I found out what you all talking about... Aahhhh

"purse" is for American language...
http://www.armcandygirl.com/wp-content/celine-poulbot-purse.JPG , not ladies wallet... http://img.alibaba.com/photo/50259821/Ladies__Wallet.jpg correct?

"handbag" is for British language..., not purse...
"purse" is for British language is ladies wallet (American language)...

Now I know what you all talking about "purse" is handbag... "ladies Wallet" as purse.

For male: Wallet..../for female: purse in British language.

Sorry confuse between British and American language.

Now I know what you all talking about.

Students use backpacks to go school are very common here in Germany. They have already female and male wallet and small pocket with zip
inside backpacks for "private things". It's not just for female but male as well... I didn't see that many female student carry purse (handbag) everywhere but left things in their backpacks. Oh yes they brought female and male wallet with them because they need something to pay...

To my opinion, bann a purse (handbag) does not solve anything but teach them paraniod more and more which is no good... They can hide any weapons in sock, etc...

This is new to me. Be honest I do not see many girls goes to school with purses but backpack because they do not have locker and they have to carry books in backpack all day. Girls can use backpack to have some private, u know.

Yes, I aware that small female/male wallet and small size with zip for private thing in backpack... There're very common for children and students have backpack here in Germany for go to school.

Well, girls can pick "private thing" up from small size with zip to go rest room...

backpacks banned???? :jaw: :eek3:

How do they carry their school books with them to home for their homework?

Thank you for explanation... I know now what form of purse, you are talking about.

But they could hide a gun in their socks, underwear, bra, or in their own pockets....

True, they are smart to find way how to hide something if backpacks, purse etc...are banned.

That's not very dependable. Sometimes the vending machines run out, or the coins get stuck, or the girl doesn't have exact change. Also, they only get one brand choice, and that's not suitable for everyone.

I don't think purses should be banned in classrooms. Anyone can hide anything under their clothes, purses, back packs, lockers and who knows wherever else so what's the difference about it? If they're that anal about securities then why not set up detectors at school just like airports? I'd bring my purse for my personal supplies and few other things. Isn't that too much to ask?
