Should purses be banned in classrooms?

A few weeks ago my daughter informed me that they are no longer allowed to bring purses into their classrooms at school. At first I just shrugged off the news, not really thinking it was that big of a deal, but it has been at the back of my mind nagging at me ever since. Now that I've had a chance to think about it a little more, I've realized how much this news really bothers me.

The students weren't really given a reason, but I imagine it was along the lines of having items that could be distracting in class readily available - cell phones, iPods, that sort of thing. Of course, this doesn't eliminate the possibility that kids will have these items on them in the classroom, and I agree that the individual items should be banned in school from anywhere but their locker, but purses?

Any parent of a teenage girl knows that one of the main reasons they even carry purses is to hold their supplies for 'that time of the month'. It is difficult enough for girls to adjust to the changes they go through when they start their periods, but to add unnecessary pressure and possible embarrassment by having to go to their locker - which isn't always near their classrooms - grab what they need, somehow cover it up (because we all know most of them would be mortified to let teachers or boys see those sorts of things) then proceed with the rest is kind of ridiculous, in my opinion.

I'm considering contacting the school about this issue, but wanted to hear your opinions first. Do you agree that this is an unnecessary action taken by the school, or do you think I am overreacting and they should keep their purses in their lockers because of other items they may be carrying? Have you had to deal with anything similar?

Children should put their purse on their pocket to buy their school canteen lunch and bus fares home from school.

Some kids break in school locker to pinch valuable things, some have a 24 hour camera to watch it, like my daughter's school.

Some smart a$$ children watching other kids's school locker pin number with memory, and come back later to open it!!

Also teachers are fed up receiving complained from parents where is my child's mobile ph, camera, laptop, ipod, etc.

Best rules is not to bring valuable things to school!!!!!!!!

I'm agree that the students should not bring their value things (mobile phone, camera, laptop, ipod, etc) to school but it's purse, I'm asking you the question about.

Why they banned Purse, not Wallet? There're students who also bring their purse/wallet with them to school..

I rather student can carry their purse in the classroom in case need to use for restroom as their privacy... instead walk up to the locker... because of $

Isn't fair for men who carry their wallet on the pocket.. what make the difference? Unless Young Teenagers must not bring their valuables ipod and etc... stay at home.. but cellphone must carry in the purse in case if emergency contact likely 911 or call parent... Would be easier..

Student must responsibility turn the cell phone off.... while in the classroom!

I disagree to bann the purse in school.

I for one didnt really bring purse to school every day but just my time of the month or I put it in my sox til it time to change it.


For those teenager girls does really need their time of the month but leave the valuable at home.

Where I work I have seen cellphone and laptop and other valuable in school what a mess!!!

I disagree. I also agreed with Angel abt girls' needy for going to bathroom. Some girls need purses for their asthma medicines.

i never banned my purse in my old school!

but i can bring my purse anywhere but i have cell phone,wallet,keys,etc.

mostly teenages kids always bring purse all the times because if need drives self to school have drive license than drop parents or family my cousin who now 19 years old can drive anywhere to school and she can taking their purse with them than nothing!

im sure the security will check their purse and no guns,knives,whatsoevers!

im suggestions about teengers becareful not leave anywhere like stores,work,etc if need go home

I voted disagree. Women needs their purse for their personal reason, like make-up, tampons, and/or pads, pens/pencils, money if needed,etc. I think it's dumb to ban purses in school. I can understand about cell phones or laptop.

I vote disagree it's shuld not banned for purse in classroom what if some girl who start period how can she bring pad in private? so shuld bring her's purse with her in case also cellphone either pager too if happen start period or if happen emerc(sp) to family get sick or car accident or due death or ects

Nodding agreement. This is definately a right to privacy issue, and the schools are really going too far.

I'm not certain Liebling, but with the school shootings that have happened in the U.S. recently, I would think it is because no one could get a gun in a small wallet, but they could hid a gun in a purse.

This is new to me. Be honest I do not see many girls goes to school with purses but backpack because they do not have locker and they have to carry books in backpack all day. Girls can use backpack to have some private, u know.

Some girls carry small purses inside their big backpacks. They don't want to carry a huge backpack into the bathroom. Sometimes the school restrooms don't have places to hang them.

A restroom full of girls with big backpacks gets crowded real quick. :P
