My friend is planning on buying ATVs for her twins on their 4 year-old birthday. A group of us got into an argument/debate on whether it is safe or not. I dont think it is safe cuz my stepmom's cousin lost her 10 year old son to an ATV accident a few years ago.

What do you think?

Real ATV or those toys that go on a battery at about three MPH?

A real one no! But the toys are not that dangerous if used with supervision.

She said the gas ones that go 35 mph.

They are called ATV 500cc's.

hmmm it depends.... My Son had power Fourwheeler at 18 months and he loved it.... he played with it until he outgrown it which was just few months ago and he's three. But I may get him ATV.... If I teach him safety and everything and as long as he wears helmet... then I would let him ride ATV at age of four.

He's already skateboarding, scooter and riding bikes at age of three... and Skateboarding is quite dangerous enough.

I am against ATV for 4 years old. A four years old is not that responsible.

A four year old has no business driving an ATV they simply do not have the physical or mental control to safely drive one. There is a reason why the law has been around for years that you must be 14 to drive anything under adult supervision and 16 to start driving on your own. She should wait until her twins are both 14 and they must share the use of one ATV that is single rider and under adult supervision (meaning parent or legal gaurdian)

I am against a 4 year old driving a gas ATV....a electric toy ATV that goes up to 3 mph is ok. It's not really a responsible parent for letting a 4 year old drive a fast and dangerous ATV. I would advise until in around teens.

I have NEVER driven any ATVs in my life. I did drive a moped once, though.

NOPE! I refused to buy ATV for 4 years old!! A toy typed one is OK.

No thanks. not for my boy yet. he's only almost 6 yrs old. my dh lost his control and got real hurt. i can't remember what did he got. however, he sold his atv fast after his accident.

500cc or 50cc?

500cc is a very large atv. way to large for a 4 year old

50 is very small. I still would not let my son on one at 4.

the electric power wheels rides are ok tho

You may as well give the 4 year old the keys of your own car.

Talk about being irresponsible.

3 or 30 mph.. it doesn't matter. The child will want something faster and bigger.

My mistake...50cc's.

I wish she wouldnt get her twins something like that. What's wrong with a bike? Oh well.

At 4 years old, I feel that it would be too young for them to use an ATV with 50 cc. Perhaps at a bit older age, it'd be better because they would be aware of their surroundings and to maintain the balance of riding on an ATV but really, in overall - at 4, a lot of things can happen while they are on the ATV.

I allowed my kids when they were young about 6ish to drive a small little 30, after hubby adjusted the throttle to make it go less than 10 mph. They rode and rode around the property. supervised, of course.

Now that they are older I allow them to ride the 500 and the 450 at the mud hole supervised and geared up with safety gears, helmets is a must!!

Umm, we bought atv for our son when he was 2 years old. Now he is 26 years old and still alive. We have big backyard and room for him to ride around in our backyard. Us irresonponsible? I think many sports are very dangerous and parents still put their kids in the sports. Kids do die. Even ride a street bike can be dangerous.

It probably depends on how skilled the trainer is.

If the parents are very confident that they can train their kid with riding an ATV, then fine. Of course, some parents make mistakes... but don't we all make mistakes.

I know some people who are already skilled with some things that even an adult is very impressed. I think I knew a kid who already knew how to drive John Deere tractors at age 3 or 4.

Yikes, if for my daughter then NO WAY. I guess she choose to buy them for her kids then let her be?
