I know for a fact that several Gallaudet alumni are working there. I pray they are okay.
And I am friends with one of them - no news on his FB wall yet.
I won't know what have happened to them until I get home tonight. I am not allowed to have access to FB at work.
That may be why he hasn't given any updates.
I hope they are ok.
Yes, there is security on the base perimeter, checkpoints at the entrances, and usually within the base at various entry points at gates and inside buildings. However, if someone has proper credentials to get thru the gate with a vehicle, they could carry in an arsenal. Some bases regularly check the interiors of vehicles, some do it only randomly. Then, once thru the outside checkpoints, a shooter can grab the gun and make a running blast thru the doors of a building. Entrance scanners and metal detectors only detect weapons--they don't stop them.Six people are dead and there could be two more shooters on the run. I would like to know how the HELL did 1-3 armed men get into the Navy Yard? Don't they have to use or show any kind of ID card before being allowed in the building? This does not look good to me that a mass shooting can happen that easy in a Navy Yard in Washington.

These mass shootings always happen in gun free zones.
Yup, I agreed with that one. The more gun free zones, the more shoot outs going to happen.
They have the ability to do searches at gates. The problem is the inconvenience and impracticality. During morning rush hour to work at the bases would require people sitting in long lines for hours every day to get properly searched. Traffic would back up into the city streets. You would think with all the mass shooting there been and a trial for a person that killed peoples on a military base that there would be sticker security at all our military bases. Something needs to be done we just can't keep allowing mass shooters to gun down innocent people .

A proper search includes looking at and sometimes scanning each person's ID card, checking the vehicle registration, visually searching the entire passenger compartment and trunk, searching with sniffer dogs, and using a mirror to check the undercarriage of the vehicle, and questioning the driver.
Physical security at gates include labyrinth entrance lanes, armed guards, and pop-up road barriers.
Physical security of buildings include barriers to prevent vehicles from crashing into them, locked access doors, and armed guards.
