(CNN) -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a new bill into law Sunday that will fine paparazzi for taking photos that invade a celebrity's right to privacy. The law also targets media outlets who purchase the photos.

Throngs of photographers often jockey to get the perfect shot of a celebrity, but that doesn't mean it's welcomed. Britney Spears famously had enough one night, taking an umbrella to a photographer's SUV.

In 1998, Schwarzenegger himself had his car swarmed by paparazzi while he was picking up his child from school.

Jennifer Aniston received $550,000 and an apology from a photographer who used a high-powered telephoto lens to shoot her in the backyard wearing only panties.

While paparazzi may get a bad rap for their methods, celebrity columnist Ben Widdicombe said things are not always what they seem.

"A lot of times the shot you see in the magazine is actually orchestrated by the celebrity themselves," said celebrity columnist Ben Widdicombe. "Celebrities like Britney Spears, for example, are infamous in the industry for letting their assistants tell the paparazzi when they'll be leaving the gates."

Celebrity photos can be big business, especially when it comes to major milestones. Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher reportedly pocketed $3 million from OK for their 2005 union. Eva Longoria and Tony Parker received $2 million from OK for photos of their lavish Paris, France, wedding.

Expectant celebrities can also rake in big bucks. People magazine reportedly paid $14 million for the first pictures of the Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie twins.

The new California law makes it a crime to take and sell unauthorized photos of celebrities in "personal or familial activity." Violators face fines up to $50,000. The anti-paparazzi amendment takes effect in January.

About damn time!

Those photo flashers killed Princes Di, flashing blinding bulbs at the driver, causing him being unable to see where he was going and crashed into the wall, killing him and Princess Di and her Fiancee.

Then they had the gall to keep shooting bloody photos of her in the car while she was dying.

This law needs to be all over the world.

Police in France arrest several photographer and going jail for lifes but can fines between France and British who send you? due agency of photographer for violate Royals's private rights..But im sure paparazzi know best dont go near Royals around yards.

About time......yeah wwe don't really feel sorry for the filthy rich famous beautiful people......but they are human and deserve some kind of human privacy. And the ability to walk in public as humans.
Way overdue. They actually become physical blocking paths, etc. And stalking houses. Filthy moneygrubbers. Who cares anyway....we see too much of these people....they pick like 4 girls...brit...paris...lindsay....jessica ...only one of which has any semblance of brains (lindsay).....and we get that shoved down our throats for 10 years when there are many more beautiful ladies out there.

but the driver was drunk
That and also the fact that he was speeding which added to the crash factor.

How well this law will be effective remains to be seen. One thing to have a law against something... another to CATCH people doing it. It gives the police that much more to do on top of other laws they have to enforce.

i.e. why were the police around to stop the mugging/attack on an old couple for their social security checks? Because they were trying to stop paparazzi from getting pictures of Brad Pitt talking to a pretty girl.

but the driver was drunk

Yes and on top of that, flashing a drunk driver didn't help matters. Do bright lights hurt a drunk's eyes worse than being sober?

It was bad enough the driver was drunk, but to have an added combination with these camera flashers in your eyeballs became even more worse.

everything starts with drunk driving. it wouldn't matter anyway because of incoming driver's headlight. It will have same effect as photographer's flash. Drunk driver would be swaying all over the road and the incoming driver would be flashing his headlight at him.

same thing. The blame is entirely on drunk driver, not aggressive paparazzi.

He was speeding because the Pappies was chasing them on motorcycles with a backseater on the bike holding a camera, zipped up along side the car and FLASH FLASH! Bikes are speedy and they can make quick maneuvers to the front of the car and BAM! Instant blinding.

Now think about this, what color is the wall of the tunnel? Light color right? So how about a reflective flashing bouncing off the walls, making things even more brighter?

See a headlight coming your way is slower than a flashbulb, your eyes from a headlight incoming gives a chance to adjust, but when you have a pappy speeding up on the bike and BAM, the eyes didn't have a chance to adjust because it became sudden rather than a few seconds after seeing headlights coming towards the driver.

Another thing, from a standpoint, which is more brighter? A flashbulb or a pair of headlights? It's a trick question, so think of it before answering.

all of it does not matter. this man should not be driving in the first place. whatever the reason you come up with - it does not justify drunk driving. there are many celebrities being driven by drivers with paparazzi following them from all over and many celebrities are still alive.

Drunk Driving is never justified. period. Drunk Driving kills. period. Princess Diana died as the result of drunk driving. period.

Oh now it is about DI? Do anyone who have the picture of Jennifer in panties?

I agree that Paparazzi peeps drives celebrities up to the wall and lead to something that could be seriously and fatally wounded or injuries.

Hun, make a new thread about DI died as the result of Drunk Driving.

yes. if the celebrities were injured as the result of paparazzi's aggressive action, then yes we have a case in here. but Princess Di - that's the different story. I am not going to overlook this drunk driver's foolish action because of mitigating circumstance. I will shit on him if I were the judge and I would sentence him to jail with maximum penalty allowed for drunk driving. He killed Di, not paparazzi.

I agree he shouldn't have been driving, but otoh, the pappies had no right to be invading their privacy. To take pictures of them bloodied in the backseat took balls and I'm glad they got sent to prison for what they did. They did nothing to help them but stand there and take pictures.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Di is related to this thread because one is saying Di died as the result of paparazzi's aggressive action which caused her driver to crash and that she could be alive if this anti-paparazzi law existed at that time. My argument is that Di died because of driver's drunk driving - regardless of anti-paparazzi law.

by that logic - any bystanders who walked past the accident scenes would go to jail just because they were just standing there and looking, filming it with their cellphone for youtube.

I strongly do not recommend any bystander to provide assistance because they most likely will cause further injury or even death. There's absolutely nothing that paparazzi can do in this horrible car accident. Can they pry the car open with their bare hands? should they just forcibly drag Di out of car when it took rescuers long time to pry it open?

what paparazzi did was tasteless but not illegal. They went to jail because of politicians' and public's knee-jerk reaction and anger. If I remember correctly - they left the scene of accident. Paparazzi has every rights to "invade" their privacy because there was no law prohibiting them from doing so. Now that California has enacted this law. if Princess Di were in California, these paparazzi would be in jail.
