School Snow Day Mean No Meals For Some Kids

I can't believe that parent can't afford to buy a bread and putter butter jar (less than $2).

The parent shouldn't have a child if they cannot be responsible to have enough food supply without depending on government aid.

Saavik survived with extremely cheaper lunch.

I don't have food stamp, despite about live on SSDI.

Peanut butter does not cost less than $2.00 a jar , it cost over $3.00 a jar now . I guess you do not watch the news or been living under a rock to not know the cost of living has increase in the past 5 years .

What is your current monthly budget for food? (cash and food stamps total)

I really think this is no one business . I was trying to find out if kids in people cities that get free meals at school get meal to bring home when school will be close dues to a storm.
I am not interested in how much money people live on. That way off topic!

And that's why I need to learn to budget my money better, starting NOW. I've had enough of being poor all the time, and it's time to change that for once and all.

Start school, find a job, send a letter to the congress, preferably conservative (republican) politicians because they don't want to expand the food stamp, ask your friends, especially Derek, ask charities or find a food bank.

It will be parent's responsibility to get a help like food banks or contact the charities - it means they need to hunt to get enough food.

It isn't first time for kids to be hungry due to lack of food, so it did happen to many kids, including me.

I'm sorry it happened to you, but that doesn't make it okay.

This is what I mean. You go out to eat often which isn't good. Buying food from store to cook at home costs much less and healthier in the long run.

I often hear you say, "I'm ordering food...I'm going out for lunch...my food is being delivered soon."

Eat at home! You'll find out you have more money at the end.

Pet peeve of mine is hearing poor person complain not being able to afford this and that yet they go out to eat or spend money on useless things like cable for $80-100 when they could live on Netflix for $8 a month.

No, foods are very cheaper in southern states - store brand bread and peanut butter cost $2 combined.

Foods are expensive in northern states, though.

There are two food pantries near my home I can rely on, so I'm okay. However, my food management skills are improving, and I am starting to rely on those less and less, and the only thing I need to learn to do is better manage my money.

For my government checks, it's just over $740, and my food stamps is $155, so almost $900 total, but more than $600 worth of my government checks goes to paying my bills, leaving very little for myself to use, and that's why I need to learn to make better use of that little money I get.

Do you have Section 8 voucher? You may save a lot of money if you use Section 8.

Do you have a lot of credit card bills?

Yes, you have a point. I understand perfectly where you're coming from, and for the most part, I DO eat at home-- I rarely go out to eat, anyhow. As for cable, it's a must have, cause it keeps me out of trouble.

I in government housing, so Section 8 does not apply. I do not have ANY credit card bills, because I have none, knowing I cannot afford the high interest rates.

He said he needed to make a food budget. Also, if he didn't want to reply he didn't have to.

I don't know why you spent $600 on bill - it will be 81% of your budget.

Do you pay a rent? How much per month?

Reba is correct. Having a food budget is one of my priorities for this year, and since we're talking food and budget, it's kinda related in a way.

Yes I do. It's $381/month. Cable is the next most expensive bill, at $98.48 for March, and my phone is at $66.20/month. My MiFi is at $25/month for the time being.

I really didn't want to know all the details of your income; just the food budget part.

You need to figure out how much of your income can be used for food each month. Then, set that aside in an envelope labeled "FOOD" and use that money for food only. That includes groceries that you use at home, and food that you eat at restaurants or that you take out from restaurants.

Understand that when the envelope is empty, you can't use any other money for food. That is your food budget (limit).

Your other money will go into other budget envelopes (SAVINGS, EMERGENCIES, TRANSPORTATION, RENT, UTILITIES, CLOTHING, FUN, etc.). No cheating out of envelopes. :) That's a budget.

Yeah, about that part.... only problem is, I do my bills with my banking mobile app, and it's kinda moot. I also pay cable and phone online, too, so those, too, are moot.

Unfortunately, it is parent's fault if they can't supply with enough food.

Sometimes. If the parent made bad choices, manage their money badly, is irresponsible, etc. But if bad things happen that they can't control, and if that leads to circumstances that are more than they can manage, then that's not their fault.

But, it looks like you and I will just have to disagree about this.

Oh wow, your rent is 51% but if you live in government housing so you supposed to pay no more than 30% monthly (HUD rule). For 30% - it supposed to be $225 per month.
