School Snow Day Mean No Meals For Some Kids

Does your school give kids meals to bring home if a big storm is coming and school will be called off the next day?

Kids need learn to make their own lunch at home.

It's not about knowing how to make lunch. It's about households where there's not enough food to eat, and the kids depend on school lunches.

It is parent's responsible to have enough food supply for kids.

Some of them can't. And the school system helps with free (or lower cost) lunches. So when school is cancelled, it's rough on the kids, regardless of who is responsible.

And in today's economy, parents can barely afford the essential things kids need to survive, and that's never a good thing. People who have a comfortable job and good pay never have to worry about that, but the rest of us have plenty of worries.

I can't believe that parent can't afford to buy a bread and putter butter jar (less than $2).

The parent shouldn't have a child if they cannot be responsible to have enough food supply without depending on government aid.

Saavik survived with extremely cheaper lunch.

I don't have food stamp, despite about live on SSDI.

I have food stamps, and it BARELY covers the cost of food. I have enough for 2-3 weeks of food, and that's about it. That's why I try to hold off on good shopping until later in the month, so I'll have enough to last through the month.

You told me that you aren't good with budget plan.

That's perfect example about many parents have a poor budget plan and they should save some money for emergency. Time to cut the internet bill or cut the spending on unnecessary stuffs like movies and games, so spend money on needs like food.

When school closed, it is your responsible to take care of your kid.

I may not be great with money, but I AM pretty good with food management. In fact, I do it better than my housemates.

It's pretty hard to made a lunch where there is not enough food in the house. This about families having a hard feeding their kids , if there is a snow day a lot kids do not get a hot lunch and breakfast .

It is cheaper to buy food at Walmart but if you buy food from local grocery - cost more.

When food stamp runs out, you have to spend your own money on 1-2 week of food.

It will not getting a better because the congress will make extra cut to food stamp within year.

I agree that if there are unnecessary expenses, those should be given up: food should be a first priority, and you're right, it can be bread and peanut butter.

But for people who are already living without luxuries etc., and still can't make ends meet, they should get some help. You said they shouldn't have kids, but their situation may have changed after they started their families. Maybe someone got laid off and couldn't find work at a decent wage etc.

And that's why I need to learn to budget my money better, starting NOW. I've had enough of being poor all the time, and it's time to change that for once and all.

Well, life isn't easy. ;)

It will be parent's fault due to lack of responsibility.

When school closed, you are responsible to take care of your kid.

I survived with very little lunch at deaf school because foods were lousy and tasted bad. I learned very hard way, though.

What is your current monthly budget for food? (cash and food stamps total)

It will be parent's responsibility to get a help like food banks or contact the charities - it means they need to hunt to get enough food.

It isn't first time for kids to be hungry due to lack of food, so it did happen to many kids, including me.

For my government checks, it's just over $740, and my food stamps is $155, so almost $900 total, but more than $600 worth of my government checks goes to paying my bills, leaving very little for myself to use, and that's why I need to learn to make better use of that little money I get.
