Say goodbye to full-time jobs with benefits

It said:

"Health care reform legislation passed earlier this year, which will create a mandate for employers to provide health benefits for employees but not contractors, will also feed the trend.

"'Once you have an employer mandate in place, you create an incentive for employers to get around that mandate'," said Susan Houseman, a senior economist studying labor issues at the W.E. Upjohn Institute."

before Obamacare - did employers provide benefits for contractors?

Not true, not offer vacation or sick pay are not part of socialism and it is very different.

In socialist countries, they do have better work rights with pay more and less hours, that what I believe.

Could be, heard the deaf people under Soviet Union treated better than others. So, you could be correct but I'm still worry about it in our future as well.

Yup, it would be depends on countries and if countries are poorer then socialism could be worse but hard to tell.

I do like to learn more about labors in other countries.

there you go. Like Arizona's new immigration law that mirrors federal immigration law... the purpose of that statement you posted in your post #20 is for redundancy and no loophole. Obamacare is NOT requiring employers to provide benefits for contractor/freelancer.

I think what Reba is getting at is this : Instead of full-time regular paid staff, companies will now use temp staff to fill positions. IE - you will work for one year then after that year as a temp worker you will be laid off and will have to reapply for the position if you want to keep your job.

One good example is this:

Many newspapers across America have paid full-time staff writers and editors. In the future instead of having so many full-time staff writers, most contributions will be made by freelance journalists who get paid only when their piece is actually published. Of course, this may be helpful for some known writers/journalists to improve on their writing skills if they want to continue to eat on a fairly regular basis. Those that know they can't hack it will be forced out of the newspaper business altogether.

JMHO.

ok ya'all - I did some digging into this "say goodbye to full-time jobs with benefits" claim because I'm seeing a lot of confusion in here.

1. This claim affects mainly white-collar jobs or those in office-related jobs.
2. This claim does not really affect blue-collar workers or those in labor-related jobs like Texan Guy and Endemic.
3. Look at the picture provided in OP

those are the kind of people who are affected by this... not labor-related workers.

4. I do not believe this claim is not caused by Obamacare. It is caused by a trend in society because of internet and I guess current market situation. More and more people are becoming mobile, flexible, and skillful. The paradigm in workforce (IBM, DeLoitte, military, defense contractors, writers, etc) is changing. The business studies show that the corporations benefit more in "work-at-home" concept in terms of productivity. In some cases, depending on what business, the corporation may benefits more in saving cost by hiring contractors/freelancers but the drawback is the decreasing quality of its service. Shame but not illegal.

5. As contractors/freelancers - you are paid more than full-time employee.
6. As contractors/freelancers - you are free to work for one or more employers (depending on contract, situation, time management, etc.)

Should you hire a contractor or a full-time employee?

Good point, I really don't see employers such as Tyson laying off all current staff and production members in favor of new temp workers when they already meet the requirements of Obamacare and are still fairly profitable.

However I can see employers such as Walmart laying off all permanent non-management full-time staff in favor of temporary workers to work for 90 days only or cut all non-management full-time associates down to just part-time to where they are not required to pay benefits and offer sick leave. Currently as an associate at walmart, you are allowed only 6 non-scheduled days off per year and when you do take a non-scheduled day off, you have to work 6 perfect months before that day comes off. It lets shitty employers such as walmart get away with even more crap.

Wow......I don't know how you keep missing Reba's point. It's pretty easy.

Because the bill requires employers to provide insurance for employees many companies are choosing to hire contractors RATHER than new employees so that they don't have to pay the insurance.

Yes the contractor will still have to have insurance......but the company won't be on the hook for it.

1. Not exactly
2. It will eventually
5. Not always

again - contractors never had benefit from company since... forever. The agency that contractor works for does provide benefits but not all agencies.

and again - I still see no direct connection between this change of workforce and Obamacare. it's still a stretch..... by a strand thinner than hair

ok, then explain how a full time employee with benefits suddenly becomes a contractor?

We know this. Reba is a contrator......and I used to be. No one is claiming they did get benefits. That's the point. Employers are looking for ways to avoid paying healthcare .....so they are going to the old reliable....contractors. Never had to pay benefits for them.....still don't.
