Recruitment

I had problems with recruitment when my hearing loss was moderate to severe. Now with a profound loss, it seems nothing is loud to me, even with hearing aids. One more advantage to being Deaf, I guess.

Maybe recrutment comes with varying degrees. After I had it I couldn't bear to use my hearing aids AT ALL. I didn't refere to it as 'recrutment'. I refered to it as 'sound phobia'. Some noises were physically painful for me.

Recruitment for CI users and HA users is the same. The only difference is what causes it.

Here's a great article on recruitment for those who want to learn more about it:

Recruitment from Hearing Loss

Thanks Hear again. That definately discribes what I've got. I think if you get recrutment badly enough you get sound phobia as well since the brain starts associating noise with pain. When you discribed that unpleasant noise in your other post it made me wince. So just the mere description of that noise was painful.

I'm also wondering, does anyone else with recruitment have bad dreams involving all these noises but for some strange reason they can't be turned off?

You're welcome dreama.

The only time I've had bad dreams about a sound I heard was when I was nearly hit by a turning car I didn't hear on my right side. This was 6 months following the activation of my first CI. For months after, I kept hearing the sound of screeching tires in my dreams.

I also have nightmares due to my PTSD that are similar in nature although the sounds I hear in those dreams are related to the traumas I experienced.

According to my CI audi who is an A.u.D., recruitment can happen to anyone with hearing loss although it's more severe in those who have severe or profound hearing loss.
