Recruitment

Is recruitment the same as being overwhelmed with sounds and noises.

Or just with certain sounds?

No. Recruitment is when a person perceives sounds as being louder than they actually are. Being overwhelmed by sounds doesn't change the way they are heard.

As far as the frequencies recruitment affects, it could be any of them -- high, medium or low.

Oh....I thought that recruitment happened with the cells in the coachlar? That's what I picked up on my various and sundry hearing related listservs.
Maybe CI recruitment is more akin to an auditory processing glitch in the brain.

You're right DD. It does, but when it comes to the CI, the brain is what causes recruitment when it is experienced by implant users. Remember too that the fluid within the cochlea is released (partially or completely) during CI surgery, so there are no hair cells that remain.

:ty:

Because, I do find myself being overwhelmed with sounds and noises by the end of the day. I usually just take out my hearing aids.

But seems you are speaking of something different.

You're welcome Babyblue. :)

From what you've described, it seems like you are exhausted because of the sounds you hear all day which may make you more sensitive to what you hear, but the difference is that you still hear those sounds at the same volume. People with recruitment don't. They hear them much, much louder.

I'm surprised that so many people don't know what recruitment is. I thought everyone with significant hearing loss got it. Obviously I am mistaken.

According to my audi, one does not need to have severe or profound hearing loss to experience recruitment.

In fact, it can happen to those who have mild hearing loss as well.

Unfortunately, recruitment is an "equal opportunity" condition that does not discriminate.

I have never suffered from recruitment but by the sounds of it, it should really annoyin and hard to deal with

It can be very annoying and difficult to cope with. I've resorted to using my soft map as my regular everyday program because there are just too many sounds that bother me. I have no idea why this is even an issue for me since I grew up with hearing most of my life. Oh well. The only thing I can do is accept it and try to deal with it as best I can. At least I have a soft map that helps dampen sounds so they aren't painfully loud like they were before.

a bit off topic but i really struggle in background noise. Is there anything that filter out background noise?

I just remembered something the director of my local deafblind center told me. She said the overall percentage of HoH and profoundly deaf people with recruitment is very small compared to the number of those who have tinnitus. Lucky me. I happen to have both, but at least my tinnitus improves from time to time and is no longer severe like it was for 6-8 months following both of my CI surgeries.

You could try using autosensitivity or Beam on your Freedom. I have autosensitivity to soften loud sounds, but I've found that it also helps me hear better in noisy environments.

My audi put BEAM, ADRO and WHISPER on my ci a year or two ago but took it off in october because i never used it. I guess I need to contact my ci centre and get beam put back on

I apologize for not explaining that in my OP. Recruitment is when ordinary sounds are perceived as being much louder than they actually are. In some cases, they can be painful.

Interesting. I learned something new! Don't know if I ever experienced this though.

I didn't know what recruitment was until the director of the deafblind center explained it to me after someone scraped the legs of a chair against a tile floor and I reacted negatively. When that happened, my head felt like it was going to explode. The sound was very painful. If you've heard the sound of nails on a chalkboard, just amplify that an extra 10 or 20 dB and you'll have some idea of what I experienced.

You may want to give Beam another try. It never helped me, but then again, I didn't have a very good map either.

So with CI users it's more like an "auditory processing" glitch?
Does it sound "different" then HA recruitment?

<snip>
Do any of you also experience recruitment even after having CI(s)?
<snip>

I experience it some and typically after listening to music for a while. I doesn't bother me as I just hear everything slightly better for a period of time. Never gave it a thought and would not have associated it with recruitment.

Interesting, learn something everyday.

My theory for why I probably get mild recruitment is that music puts my brain in hyperdrive from a sensory standpoint.
