RAM upgrade

First computer was Apple IIe.

Next was a IBM 286 from surplus property. :P MS-DOS, baby!

Well, to be fair, I wanted the upgrade so I could more easily run all the stuff for my IT classes. If I wasn't buying it to use in my IT classes, I probably would have gone with the standard 4 gigs. But 8 gigs is good. It'll help keep the computer operational longer.

I already done that with my Mini MAC and tell you this the major improvements are seriously right there! Worth every penny that you bought it, ;) You made the right choice 8GB is awesome. I wouldn't recommend upgrade just to 4GB

If you don't have a 64 bit OS, you can't use anymore than 4GB for a 32 bit system. Also, for a notebook you don't want to just throw in any type of ram because the ram type has to be correct and the power consumption will be off.

Changing the ram is the easy part.

Can anyone tell me if software on the Mac OS uses the extra RAM? I installed 8GB memory at the same time I got the 64 bit Vista, but the extra RAM is never used. I'm told it's not Microsoft fault, but rather the software companies don't want to commit to using the extra RAM and lose compatability with older 32 bit OSes. Given that Apple have more control over how their OS is used, I wonder if they're able to get software companies to use the 64 bit functionality?

AJW, No idea

and to the OP, sequoias, i thought you were talking about Tunnel Rams LOL

Its like trying to compare apple with Orange. Apple and PC is different platform, they both run different.

Regardless of OS, if you have a 64 bit machine, but are running a 32 bit OS you will not use over 4 GB of ram. To solve the problem you have to install the 64 bit version of the OS. Yes, Mac will use it as well as long as you have the right OS and you won't lose compatibility as 64 bit can run 32 bit applications.

To see how much ram you are using or what OS

wow i just remembered i used to do machine code on 8 bits processors...64 is an incredible achievement of technology, i wonder if there's any 128 bit or 256 bit processors in existence? and vacation guy is right...its the OS's ability its inherient set up to operate within the 32bit environment and thus its restricted to 4GB ram access...

My macbook still 4GB of RAM and PC desktop (gamer) still 4GB of RAM. Both works smooth and no complained so far.

Hey peeps...

I'm curious, have some of you done memory upgrade on your computer? I have done it several times. :) I recently ordered Kingston 8 GB DDR3 1066 MHz RAM upgrade for my Mac Mini and should arrive later this week. :) I can't wait to see the results after being choked on 2 GB of RAM on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion)

Agreed. 2GB of RAM is not enough for OSX Snow Leopard with Vmware Windows XP till I upgraded to 4GB of RAM last year and everything smooth so far. My Macbook is almost 4 years old and max to 4GB of RAM. Oh well.

Oh man, this thread has brought back a few memories of the first computer I bought, a TRS-80 Color Computer with 4k of ram. I remember coding all sorts of stuff to fit into that amount of memory, those were fun times...

TRS=80 rocked! i had used System-80 which is an Australian copy of the same 8088 based BASIC system good fun it sure was. Also had a ZX81 1K ram LOL and no colour...had it ugraded to 16K with a "16K Ram Pack" boy i remembered i was high as a kite bring it home...

You mean the "Earthquake detector" pak? I remember those! How many times I facepalmed after accidentally losing a program I was typing in and bumping the module thus losing it all...

Last night I upgraded RAM on my Mac Mini and it's running much quicker and no more lags and slow responses. Altho, the only issue is that one slot isn't picking up other RAM. I have 4 GB in one slot and other slot says empty. Weird. I will go and open it up again and double check. This is a pain in the ass computer to work on lol.

Windows 32bit is stuck at 4Gb, don't tarnish the other platforms with the same brush.

^^^^ Too bad a flavor of linux doesn't have as many games written for it as Windows does, otherwise I'd be a total convert. As it is, though, one foot in both waters. :)

Yeah I have another machine for games, I am a driving freak, at least it keeps my work away from the games (and the malware!).
