Anyone here do sewing or quilting?

I love to quilt and sew. Most of time I do quilting because it's something I really enjoy doing. I've done 4 quilts so far.

I've quilted a beautiful one for my pain maintenance doctor as she was leaving on maternity leave & wanted so show her my appreciation for all she has helped me.

This is what I have made so far and one of them is a Christmas gift for my sister in law that is wheelchair-bound. I know it will help her during the colder weather and keep her lower body warm.

This is what I use and you will be very surprised at what I do and use. Nowadays the cost of batting is quite costly and the quality of batting is awful as well. Batting just seems to tear so easily when I sew so I decided to recycle old gauzy comforters and blankets. Some quilts do come in a bed in a bag kit so use those as well. If you notice the top part of the comforter fraying, use those.

Just sew the top part of the quilted corners on the frayed comforter and you have your "recycled" quilt. Some quilts go for as $500.00 to $1000.00 and I only paid $40.00 in fabric for my large quilt.

I use the flannel blankets as well to make the back side of the quilt soft and warm as well.

Since my cats are my babies, I have to make something for them!

I recycle the leftover fabrics and put catnip inside the materials and stuff them into a little pillowcase and they have a catnip pillow to play with. It's much easier to pick up the catnip pillow than vacuum or sweep the catnip off the floor. The cats just love the catnip pillow.

Sesame street muppets are so hard to do for quilting. Lot of sewing! They look real and I cannot believe that I did well on that.

Dang, you guys make great quilts! I have one made from my grandmother and there is no way I will call it a comforter, it is a QUILT! Hmmm, really, Mrs Bucket, it costs that much to buy one? Guess quilters got bargaining punch then, lol.

I made one quilt once when my younger daughter was 3. She only wanted a quilt for her birthday. We had no money so I took her old pants of denim and corduroy and made squares and put together.

A white sheet was the middle, and a patterned sheet the back. My very old neighbor had a big needle that was special to go through the squares with red yarn to make the knotted ties.

My daughter is grown up with her own baby now, but she still keeps and loves that quilt I made long ago.

Sorry no picture.

Hello

“For those of your interested in interior design ideas, you might want to take a look at the site of Sean McConnell. He uses Trompe L’oeil to create atmospheric spaces that are really striking. This post is put here on behalf of Sean and I hope you enjoy the work”.

Philips, can you post pictures of your cross stitching? It would be great to see them, smile!

sara1981- I think it's wonderful to keep those quilts and hand them down for your children. :)

Beo- Aww, that's something! Hang on to that quilt. Yes, they cost so much nowadays but I love making them and giving them out as gifts because quilting is very therapeutic for me. It's very cheap to quilt than to buy them.

Botts- the way you described the quilt, it sounds as if it was made lovingly with extra care and I can see why your daughter still keeps it.

I really remember the doctor's expression when she saw the quilt I made for her baby, she was really happy to get something handmade than mass-produced.

Post your quilts, cross stichings or hand made projects. I love those. :) Tactile smile!

wow, really cool quiltworks!!!

I used to do quilt at long time ago when I was teenager... I am consider to do with quilt work some time next year because I have a lot of leftover cotton matierals... since I have a lot of handicrafts and restored the furniture, knit pullovers, crochet things..... I am still doing on furniture restoration.... I believe you know picture of furniture, I restored and handicrafts at other threads.

They are so beautiful quilts, Mrs. Bucket! :)

I used to help my grandmother do quilting - this was when I was about 7 at the time. It was fun being taught how to do it.

She still does a lot and give away to her family, friends and the residents at the nursing homes. She wouldn't accept money for it.

Mrs. Bucket, did you do the back thing yourself? My grandmother usually sent hers to somewhere to have the back done. I don't know if I am making any sense here. :)

Mrs Bucket, your quilts are beautifully made. How long did it take you to make one? I can imagine it takes some time to do it and how to put it together the way you want it. As for me, I am not good at quilting. I do have a cross stitch but it is not finish yet.

Liebling - yes you should do it because you do wonderful crocheted crafts. I received a beautiful one from you. Wow! I always tell parents to use their children's clothes to make quilts as memory quilts. It makes wonderful memories for parents to tell their grandchildren about their own Mommy or Daddy using this dress/shirt by pointing to the square fabric. :)

Hi Brian- Wow!! The way you described spending time with your Gma makes me think back about my own Gma as she loves to knit and sew as well. Yes, I did my own batting and backing as well. It didn't take me long to do the backing. I think it takes concentration to do it.

Hugs Koala!! The large one took hubby and I over a week to do it. It was piecing the squares together and sewing it as well. The backing was a lot of work as I needed someone to hold the quilt for me so I could sew it. Many times I actually sewed my top to the quilt!

I learned not to wear baggy clothes during sewing! The lap quilt only took me three hours to piece, sew and do backing together. It becomes easier as you have more confidence in yourself.

I'm like Brian's Gma. I take enjoyment in quilting and would rather give than take money. :)

Liebling- I never forget beautiful gifts handmade by friends. They are special to me. :) It was really nice to feel with my hands as well and it is so nice to hang by the window.
