Questions and debates about blindness:

all of it! However - I'm much more fascinated with totally-blind tech than partially-blind tech because I know you use program that enlarges the content and some program that tells you something.

Internet is a very visual-intensive technology. It's rich with multimedia so I wonder how can a totally-blind person surf around. Even though Hear Again explained it.... I still don't completely get it. I need to see it in person and try it out with my own hands (I'll have to learn braille :laugh2: somehow). I try my best to design website to cover nearly all types, including people with limited English skill and short attention span. I reduce # of multimedia as much as possible because it is distracting and not everybody have latest computers.

:cool2:

I use a program called zoomtext to enlarge my screen and sometimes when i have a migrane i make it talk, I also use a closed captioned television that i put papers under, and it enlarges them, Other people use a program called JAWS, that talks but does not enlarge, i dont use that one because the voice annoys me.... There are also braille displays that show the screen in braille *hear again would be better at explaining that one*

Excuse me, but i think what Hear Again and I are worried about are misconceptions, If people dont know the truth about blindness, and start answering questions, it might get people to look down on us more as blind people, there are already enough stigmas placed on us already.

I understand what you're trying to say. That's the purpose of this thread, isn't it? How can we know about this if we don't ask questions and learn from it?

What I am trying to say is -- the attitude of saying "You're not blind? Get Out" does not always work. I am only pointing out that if a member wants to create a thread that is related to this certain topic, they are allowed to and other members are more than welcome to chime in to bring a better light to it.

It is not about why it would make others look at you guys down. It isn't the point. The point is - In defense of this.... It is where everyone should come in to band within together to try to at least understand each other rather than saying one is secluded to do so.

which is exactly why you guys can correct it for us and we correct it for curious hearing ADers as well. Don't you think we deafies have enough stigmas & misconceptions placed on us already?

That's why we come here and comfort each other.

I agree, asking questions is good, but no offense, but blind people should answer said questions so that things can get sorted out correctly.

I don't see anything wrong with that because if the person is very curious about Korean people.. why not let him create a thread about it? I am very very curious about blind technology and what you and other ADers explained about it wasn't good enough. I wanted to see it in person and try it out. .

the world's too big of curiosity and people are always curious -

true, see above post.

Let's clear this up for once and all....

First of all, Anyone has a right to create a thread if they wish to. What they do have the right to say is not to say "You can't create a thread about this and that". They can create a thread that is based on their curiosity or gaining their knowledge. That is the purpose of creating a thread.

Anyone else can feel free to chime in to answer any questions. It does not mean that a specific person has to answer that question just because they are blind, korean, black, hispanic or whatever it is. You get the picture.

In coming to defense of this - The OP was only creating the thread to divert the topic from ANOTHER thread since the other thread was going off topic. The OP's intention was for anyone to chime in to this thread and to ask question. So that means..... If a member wants to create a thread that is related to blindness or whatever the topic is - They can do that but to say that they CANNOT answer the question, That is where it is wrong because when they are more participative of answering it, other members can also chime in to refute to it to correct it in order for anyone else to learn from it.

So, with that, I think for those who doesn't wishes to do so should at least learn how to keep it to theirselves rather than making it worse than it shouldn't be.

but nobody has asked the questions yet or said anything. I don't see anything wrong with this thread. People come in and ask about blind-related matter and then you guys answer it for them... just like hearing ADer came to AD to ask about deaf-related stuff. so what's wrong with this thread?

very cool. Are you able to surf on all sites or are there some sites that you cannot surf around? If there are some sites you cannot surf around - explain why.

I just wouldn't make a thread about it... There are three different people who are blind/deaf. This would have been perfect for one of them.

I can go on all sites with zoomtext, it is really nice, with jaws some sites are harder to use, and i dont really know how to operate a braille display.

Indeed, Asking questions are good and I do agree that blind people should answer questions because they know the best from their experiences. There isn't anything wrong with that.

What I am saying is - There isn't a need to say that a sighted person cannot create a thread that is related to blindness. That is where it should not be refuted. That's the point of creating a thread where they want to post it there and others are welcome to do so. :)

oh good then you don't have constraints as totally-blind surfer has. I just googled ZoomText and I came up with this youtube about it. It is fascinating and yes it is captioned!

thanks! but what about here? I think everybody are curious as well. I don't mind PM if you prefer that way.

I personally would rather pm, if anyone has questions my inbox is always open, i just dont feel comfortable. I dont like being in a spotlight.

The problem is, correcting quite often leads to accusations of personally attacking.

I dont think anyone is personally attacking, and i never said that. I just dont like answering questions publicly about my blindness, i feel like i am on display.

If one knows how to make a correction to refute their statement (and to have a valid statement to support their piece) without making a direct attack, then the accusations won't happen. :)

you know you don't have to be in spotlight.
