If you've got something to ask or learn about blindness, by all means go for it here.

There's no holdbacks, nothing to keep you from posting what you want to except yourself, and hopefully make it G rated so that kids who read don't get some ideas.

We've had several of these threads before in which our deafblind members have been asked and answered questions regarding their blindness.

Oh yes, I do recall there was a previous thread...I just never asked a question in that one. :P

Aha, I was not aware.
I just thought about stepping up and creating this thread due to someone else's response in the Fear thread, and that no one seemed willing to do it so I acted on it. As far as general blind questions go, I don't mind seeing them personally, so I thought a central location where when it goes in one thread - they could reproach their steps back to this one and let that off-tangent discussion ensue from there. Figure like a "centralized" thread in regards to the questions that emerge during that particular discussion about something, and blindness is involved.

Thank you, Naisho.

Actually, a suggestion (thread) was made (by someone else) in the Forum Feedbacks and Suggestions sub-forum to create a whole new sub-forum for the DeafBlind, but it doesn't seem as if it was acted upon. So your thread is a good idea. :)

creating a deafblind forum was my idea. there is a general list for the deafblind that is apart from ad. it's hosted by mrs. bucket.

Blindisms- I've heard the term mentioned before. What exactly is it/are they?

blindisms are certain behaviors exhibited by blind or visually impaired children and adults. they include eye poking, rocking, hand flapping, staring at light sources (such as florescent lights on a ceiling), fluttering one's fingers in front of the eyes to see differences between light and dark and swinging one's head from side to side.

I agree, it may be time that a mod or admin may create a separate forum, as we all know that you guys do contribute a good amount to the boards.

With that being said - I only have to ask about Nika's thing - You guys were discussing about his "Extropia" and "Incyclophoria" stuff at quite a length, about how one can't do the other or something. What does this imply in the meaning of blindness? What made it so important that it was going across between you guys?

simple: nika made some confusing statements that jillio and i wanted clarified. for example, stating that he had a median rectus (a muscle that moves the eye inward) and lateral rectus (a muscle that moves the eye outward) that were responsible for causing his walleyes. as jillio pointed out, that's impossible. i also pointed out that it was impossible due to the fact that the above actions are natural and do not necessitate surgery.

I would be glad to answer any questions.

I guess it was a darn good thing I have fears about things otherwise it would have been totally inappropriate for me to create a thread about fears. Whew!

Good point, Jiro, in that we are curious about things. How else would we learn anything?

I don't have any problem with that. Maybe it's because I'm not a very sensitive type??? :dunno: beside - I don't see anything wrong with that because if the person is very curious about Korean people.. why not let him create a thread about it? I am very very curious about blind technology and what you and other ADers explained about it wasn't good enough. I wanted to see it in person and try it out. It's all related to my career because I specialize in Information Technology/HCI/Information Visualization.

the world's too big of curiosity and people are always curious - from trivial thing to embarrassing thing to etc. Like... the part where they're curious about how the blind person knows when to stop wiping his ass... or if it's true about Koreans eating dogs regularly... so on.

That's how I learn so many cultural differences... like my college roomie telling me about how he wipes his ass because it's how it is in Middle East. Which is why it's very offensive to greet people with left hand and I greet people with my left! :-o so I keep in mind to use my right hand when greeting Muslim people.

Jiro, would you like to know about technology for totally blind people, or partially, I can tell you all about the partial blind tech... but hear again would probably have to tell you more about the totally blind tech.

excuse me, but naisho is not blind and therefore doesn't have the right to create a thread that blind and deafblind members are *expected* to respond to. none of us (myself, dreama, typeingtornado, aleser or nika) have to answer anyone's questions. and besides, what gives naisho the right to say "no holds barred" when it comes to questioning? i'm sorry, but HE isn't the one responsible for answering questions. the people i named above are. if you disagree with my viewpoint, so be it.

Let's clear this up for once and all....

First of all, Anyone has a right to create a thread if they wish to. What they do have the right to say is not to say "You can't create a thread about this and that". They can create a thread that is based on their curiosity or gaining their knowledge. That is the purpose of creating a thread.

Anyone else can feel free to chime in to answer any questions. It does not mean that a specific person has to answer that question just because they are blind, korean, black, hispanic or whatever it is. You get the picture.

In coming to defense of this - The OP was only creating the thread to divert the topic from ANOTHER thread since the other thread was going off topic. The OP's intention was for anyone to chime in to this thread and to ask question. So that means..... If a member wants to create a thread that is related to blindness or whatever the topic is - They can do that but to say that they CANNOT answer the question, That is where it is wrong because when they are more participative of answering it, other members can also chime in to refute to it to correct it in order for anyone else to learn from it.

So, with that, I think for those who doesn't wishes to do so should at least learn how to keep it to theirselves rather than making it worse than it shouldn't be.

Excuse me, but i think what Hear Again and I are worried about are misconceptions, If people dont know the truth about blindness, and start answering questions, it might get people to look down on us more as blind people, there are already enough stigmas placed on us already.

<applause> exactly, typeingtornado. thank you!

all of it! However - I'm much more fascinated with totally-blind tech than partially-blind tech because I know you use program that enlarges the content and some program that tells you something.

Internet is a very visual-intensive technology. It's rich with multimedia so I wonder how can a totally-blind person surf around. Even though Hear Again explained it.... I still don't completely get it. I need to see it in person and try it out with my own hands (I'll have to learn braille :laugh2: somehow). I try my best to design website to cover nearly all types, including people with limited English skill and short attention span. I reduce # of multimedia as much as possible because it is distracting and not everybody have latest computers.

:cool2:

Jolie said it best -- anyone has a right to create a thread if they wish to. I think you misunderstood my sarcasm. Whether or not I had any fears I wanted to discuss, I still opened the thread for discussion -- even if I was the most fearless person on earth. We are all here to discuss and learn, regardless of the thread nature and the person who opened the discussion.

which is exactly why you guys can correct it for us and we correct it for curious hearing ADers as well. Don't you think we deafies have enough stigmas & misconceptions placed on us already?

That's why we come here and comfort each other.
