Qualified for a CI

Hi all Bear here! I made it! lol. I went in yesterday at 8:30 Am and they put me in the same-day surgery room. There they made me go for a urine test. Then a lot of different nurses came into the room asking me a gazillion health questions about my physical status. The only true thing I had to tell them of concern was that I am allergic to penicilin. Other than that i was healthy as an ox. While answering questions the nurse came in for the iv. I was like *groans* I hate IV's especially in the hand so she tried first to put the IV in my right hand. I was shocked not to feel it and asked what she did. Turns out she numbed it first. But she still couldnt find the vein. So moved onto my left arm and found the vein right off the bat and it was on my arm lol. They took a blood test at the same time they did the iv in my arm so kinda killed two birds with one stone. Then the wait was on for the surgery time to get there.

At 10:25 they came in the room and wheeled me back to the OR. There I got to meet the wonderfully nice staff that would be helping in the Operation. They also gave me the meds to help me get to sleep there. After I was asleep they put the tube down my throat for the general anethesia. Surgery lasted from 10:30 till 1:30. I found this out because hubby and daughter told me the doctor told them I was alright at 1:30.

At 2:30 PM I woke up in the Recovery room and boy was I in pain!! I hurt everywhere! But luckily they were right there with the shots for pain. And then the pain localized to the surgery site! whew! I was in there till about 2:45 Pm and then they wheeled me to my same-day surgery room again. There they kept testing my oxygen, my blood pressure, and my temperature. I kept needing to go pee and kept asking for more water. My throat was so damn dry from that tube they had inserted during surgery! Then the nurse made me eat a chocolate pudding to make sure I could eat. I got a little nasuea from that so they had to give me a shot to prevent that. Finally the let me go home around 4:30.

They now have me on Zithromax for the antibiotic and Percocet for pain and they told me to by an antiobiotic cream over the counter for the incision as well. So will be doing that today.

I can also take the bandages off today!! Whoo hoo! Havent done that yet was gonna wait a little while later before doing that lol.The only real pain I am having right now is where the implant itself is. I am pretty sure though that will go away.

Still cant sleep comfortably though. I will take quick cat naps and then wake back up about every half hour or so. I have to sleep sitting up right now. Geez talk about uncomfortable! Cant wait till I can sleep any old way again!

Well all that is the end of my surgery story for now. On Septemeber 13th I go back to Dr. Weber for the follow up *Angel if you wanna meet then it would be perfect! I believe my appointment time is 1:30 pm.* Then I have an appointment with Mike Scott the audiologist on September 21st! That is the day I get ACTIVATED!! whoo hoo! Then September 27th is my first map.

Now is when I move onto what will hopefully be the exciting times!

Great update! Glad to hear things went well. Take it easy and on to hookup!!!

well this one is a fastest switch on record but of course not a AD member but a friend of mine's son :)

Day One

Oh OUCH.

When my audi told me they could activate the thing the day after surgery I was kinda like, you gotta be kidding me. LOL

having seen how quickly kids can bounce back from open heart surgery I can see how they would be able to tolerate having the processor and magnet put on the day after surgery. Me I'm a big baby. One week sure, one day no way. :)

So happy to hear you're doing great. Activation will be here before you know it.

wow what a busy day you had! I did have to stay overnight because dr made sure I am ok.

Glad to hear you are back safe and sound. It sounds like everything went pretty well. Hope you are feeling better today...

hmm reading your story abt surgery made me remember my own and i realized i did not feel any pain at all. i only was very goggly and i remember i threw up sooo much and they kept me overnight because of that... they believed it was gas that caused me to throw up a lot. i dont remember if i felt any pain on my head or not... probably was on that medication where i feel very out of world thing pain killer medication...

oh yea! i do remember the tube... i woke in middle of the surgery cuz i gagged on that damn tube down in my throat and gave dr a big scare. i remembered they took it out and i stopped gagging and went right back to sleep (they thought i woke up completely but i was too tired to open my eyes) i also do remember nurses coming in my room like every hr or something and stuffed tempture thing into my mouth lol.

i did also remember last thing before i fell asleep in surgery room was nurse telling me to dream about Brandy my dog. lol

really interesting to read your story and seem lot of it is similar to mine except i was 9 years old. lot of facts i didnt remember if i have or not. heh thank you for sharing! Glad u r doing great and cant wait to hear how your first day with C.I. will go!

Congratulations on flying through surgery! Activation will be here before you know it!

Awesome, Congratulations Bear, and we hope to see you on those days that you posted above...Looking forward seeing and meeting ya :)

Well all here I am day two of post surgery. I am feeling in a lot less pain and got the bandages off now. I am finally able to sleep laying on my right side. The implant is on my left side lol.

The only complaint I have right now is the roaring I get in my ears. It gets so loud it is aggravating and surprising that no one else can hear it lol. I was told this is normal? To have the roaring sound that loud in my ear! yikes! Hope this doesnt last too long!

It still feels very weird to have the bump on my head and now the stitches are starting to itch. I know the itching is a good sign cause it means healing. lol

Cant think of much more to post about today. SO if anything more happens will post later.

P.S. Had to edit for a message to Angel, I would love to meet you guys on any of those days. Are you two still thinking about possibly being implanted?

Glad that 2 days on you are feeling a lot better. I recall that around four or five days on I found it more comfortable to sleep on the implanted side! I don't know what that was but I suspect that perhaps having the blood circulating there made it feel better.

Yes - the roaring tinnitus sound is very common after surgery and is obviously a sign of disturbance in that area. I had tinnitus before surgery anyway and after surgery it was the worst it had ever been. However it improved steadily and by 2 weeks it was back to normal levels. Switch on also helps.

How is your balance?

R2D2 so far my balance seems to be fine. Although I have been taking it very easy and not trying to move around alot.

Right now I am too afraid of falling and hurting myself. I just wanna make sure nothing happens right now and dont wanna mess anything up by a fall or something.

Am even too afraid to touch the site of the surgery lol.

Otherwise I am doing pretty good. Was finally able to sleep laying down last night. The only thing bother ing me right now is that awful roaring in the ears from time to time. I did have tinitus before surgery but nothing on this scale.

Just tired alot from the meds mostly right now. And am thinking about going back to bed although I am sick of sleeping so much lol.

By the way how is your activation doing? Hearing anymore?

Rah Rah for Bear!!

Bear, I did NOT think it would be THAT soon to get your CI!! Wow! I am so happy for you in your success with your surgery!! I have to try not to yell at you loud if I ever meet you in person. LOL Keep us posted!!! Love you!

Not much to post today except some swelling in the face. Dont ask me why this is happening but it is lol.

I also still have a numb ear and still a very little pain now. I also go to the doctor for a checkup in 2 days. So we will see more of how I am truly doing there.

I also sorta feel like i have an earache without too much of the pain right now. Hopefully it doesnt get worse.

All in all am doing pretty good 3 days post surgery.

speaking of roaring sound in ear.. think of it as alarm system going off because the cochlea has been invaded by electrode so you can tell your brain "shut up I know already about it" and ignore it (it will go away :D )

Glad that your balance is okay so far - something you don't have to worry about! :) I would TTY/call the nurse to check about the facial swelling just to be on the safe side. I got a bit of swelling around the head one night and called the on-duty doctor at the hospital at 2am! He was very reassuring and it went away.

My activation is going so well. I'm 11 weeks post now and have been very happy with the support that the CI gives me. It's not perfect hearing but I'm no longer tired out, can converse easily and am often surprised with what I can hear. Anyway won't go on as this is your thread!

LOL thank you R2 been wondering how it was going for you. As for the swelling I am gonna definitely have to call the doctor tomorrow. My left eye is very swollen right now and it is worrisome. I am sure he will tell me it will go away but will call him to be on the safe side.

Im pretty sure though that the swelling has to do with the surgery as I was implanted on the left side as well where the eye is swelling lol. So far no problems with my balance at all though whew!

Lol about the roaring Boult. That has gone away for the most part now it is back to the old beeps and bloops I used to hear in my ears all the time lol.

Well will post more tomorrow when I know more lol. Have a good night all.
