PRESIDENT BUSH WILL MAKE ALL DEAFS TO WORK WORK WORK and STOP SSI, SSA, AND SSDI IN N

Sighs. I said some of Deaf people can get jobs whereas other Deafies have hard time finding jobs where they face discrimination from hearing people. It is not easy for everyone. :|

Ok, you have to think realistically... do you think the company WILL hire individuals with SEVERE disabilities (regardless of deafness or hearing)which could not function very well? Not all of companies are willing to hire them. People with severe disabilities may seek jobs through vocational rehabilitation or other agencies. It is still a common problem we face everyday.

There's a similar policy in effect here in Australia -- it's called 'Work for the Dole' - train and help people who are on the Dole (Pension/Disability) in obtaining better skills and integret them into the workforce.

Work for the Dole

I think it's a good thing to happen because I believe in a strong work ethic and I don't like being on SSI -- I did have that for a few years in California but haven't been on it for years now since I've been working full time and plus overtime as well.
As for being unemployed, people do get unemployment benefits to help until a job has been found and so forth.

Besides, reseach has shown that 80% of those who are on Disabilty WANT to work!

Then they ought to look for and find any job! Having job is better than staying at home to collect meager benefits from governments in matters of pride and feeling-good attitude!

tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk

SSI and SSDI leads to the poverty level so they are not worthy for deaf people.

Look at Katzie's experience. Now, the deaf people have to think carefully about making a decision to collect SSI.

Get real life and find work!

Get a job as soon as possible ! Stay out of trouble !

I got the gut feeling that this thread is worth debating, so I've decided to move this to On-Topic debate, a sensible forum.

Maybe a really good idea would be to require some people who are on disabilty to do some community servicecy sort of work in exchange for disabilty benifits. Maybe then some community insistutions could cut down on costs for superflurous things. Like for example, my community college has guys mowing the lawn and doing grounds work. Now that seems to be a kind of a superfical and expensive service as the college is spending money for saleries for those people, which would otherwise be money that could go into bettering education!

Sounds fair enough to me.

Because of "Ticket to Work", we need to have more Employment Service for the Deaf, several in each states, depending on the number of deafies living there, so that they can help deaf learn how to fill out job application, job interview properly, dress up properly for job interview, look for jobs in the ads, internet, word of the mouth, learn how to get along with hearies at work, teach the hearies how to communicate with deaf at work, how to get promoted, etc. Employment Coordinator can be an advocate for companies to hire deaf employees. Also need a deaf person to be job coach to train a new deaf employee to work in new job until get used to new job. We do need that program everywhere. I used to be Vocational Skills Specialist for the Deaf and I am deaf myself. The deaf employees really benefitted from my training them and some of them remained in their jobs to this day.

I agree with you, Peachy Lady -- when I first got out of high school, I had the assistance of a VR and a deaf facility that assisted deaf people to learn how to put together a resume, looking for a job and how to approach the company with our applications and in interviews as well.

:werd: Most of Deaf people need jobs and get off on SSI because they do want to be productive and gain self esteem. I have no against Deaf people with SSI incomes for specific various reasons (ex. lay off, economic changes, medical issues, etc). For people with SSI have no reasons...then I am against it.

Oddball, I don't think ANYONE has issues with deafies and disies (to coin a term) who REALLY need SSI/Disabilty, receiving it. Even people WITHOUT disabilties can have severe difficulties with the whole healthcare system. I mean, did you know that a big part of the reason why Lasik surgery is so popular is NOT b/c people hate glasses that much? It's b/c they are sick of spending bazillions of dollahs on glasses.
Did you know that one of the biggest reasons for personal bankrupcy is b/c of health related reasons? Look at all the editorals in newspapers demanding that drug companies must lower their prices! I myself would NOT be on Disabilty if A) Zoloft was cheaper (on my parent's insurance it's a $20.00 co-pay, on Mediacid it's only $2.00) and B) if hearing aids were covered by insurance. Hearing aids aren't generally covered by insurance. Hearing aids represent a VERY significent drain on personal income b/c they are so expensive and b/c they need to be replaced every couple of years! (and that's with out of pocket money!)
However something does need to be done about the lazy ones. They may not be well educated but on the other hand they could become blue collar workers. I remember once I worked in a crouton factory for one night, but I made over a hundred dollahs for just that one night!
Maybe more Deaf schools should start Deaf/hoh postgrad employment programs on their campuses, sort of like the one at American School for the Deaf. Also, maybe something that might be a good idea would be a post-grad academic program, sort of like a bridge between high school and college for those who aren't ready for even commuinity college programs.

My alumni school provides that -- has always for the past 15 years, I reckon. It was around my time and my sister went through that in 1990 -- we both haven't relied on SSI for long periods at all...been working just about since day 1 after completing high school and attending college as well.

Each Social Security Office should have effective procedures for complying with these requirements, determining the method of communication the deaf person prefers, and procuring interpreter services.

To request an interpreter at a local Social Security office, contact that office directly. Deaf callers may also call 1-800-325-0778 (TTY) and ask for an appointment with an interpreter at a specific local office. The national operator will arrange the appointment through the local office. If a local office refuses to provide an interpreter when requested, the Social Security Administration Office for Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity will accept and investigate complaints against non-complying offices.

To file an official complaint of discrimination against a Social Security office that refuses to provide an interpreter, contact the Social Security Administration at 410-966-7507 V, or at the following address:

Social Security Administration
Office of the General Counsel
General Law Division
Room 617, Altmeyer Bldg
6410 Security Boulevard
Baltimore, MD 21235

Ask the SSA to send Form SSA-437 (Civil Rights Discrimination Complaint Form).

Another reason I stay away from receiving SSI is because just about every time I applied (4 in total) for SSI -- they always haggled over how much I had earned and if I started working whilst still on SSI, I'd inform them, but they never moved their arses in reducing the payments or stopping it altogether for like a few months. Finally stopped then they demand money to be paid back as I was 'overpaid'.
Another thing - everytime I booked an appointment, I always asked for an interpreter to be booked as well...then show up at the appointed time - NO INTERPRETER. I always cancel and tell them they should have an interpreter there, they always refused. :madfawk:

I don't think giving Deaf people "pity jobs" will solve the discrimination problem.

That's also great for Deafies who can work, but it is a big problem for those who stay at home and do nothing. If being Deaf is no longer an option to consider as disability, they'll claim disabilty on their own fat ass, "I can't work because I gained too much fat sitting at home and getting free SSI! If I have to work now, it's gonna hurt my ass and it'll break!! *sob* *sob*"!!!

It's also a downfall because there are Deaf people who need SSA benefits. Hearing people STILL discriminate the Deaf. If the Deaf are forced to use "Tickets to Work", then hearing people will take advantage of this as "cheap labor" or "pity jobs". If you do not know what "cheap labor" or "pity jobs" mean, it mean that most of the Deaf will be hired as janitors, cashiers for big corps, cleaners, stockers, sweepers, courtesy clerks, and most low-end, menial, minimum wage positions. Oh, yay!! The employers are given a tax break or credit for having a Deaf employee.

Hmm, what a dilemma! Option One: stay home, have a boring life and get fat with SSA benefits. Option Two: Get a "ticket to Work" job, lose your dignity working as a human being with a low paying, menial job that no one else would do it.

If you picked options one and two, this is the end result: "You are CHEAP."

There is another option, a third one. While you are getting help from VR and getting SSA benefits, you get off your ass, go to school and graduate from college/university with a decent degree. Then find a job. And you do it all before they cut your benefits.

End result: "You have respect and a way to make your own living without others pushing their rules on you."

I, for one, refuse to believe this "rumor" until I get a letter in the mail from SSA stating that it will definitely happen!!!

WRAD FRAUD ALERT

This fraud alert concerns a person named Richard Roehm who is allegedly
operating an organization in Orange County, California USA.
Mr. Roehm has asserted to the deaf community in many email messages that
he is a "Member" of the California Governor's Committee on Employment
of
Disabled Persons. WRAD has contacted the Committee office in Sacramento,
California. Be advised that Richard Roehm is DEFINITELY NOT associated
with that Committee. HE IS LYING TO THE DEAF COMMUNITY. For further
information and confirmation, contact the California Governor's
Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, 800 Capitol Mall,
Room 1022, MIC 41, PO Box 826880, Sacramento, CA 94280-0001; voice (916)
654-8055 or (800) 695-0350; fax: (916) 654-9821; TTY (916) 654-9820, and
ask for Pam Porteous. Or contact Ms. Porteous at her email address,
pporteou@edd.ca.gov .

Mr. Roehm has also been sending email messages telling the deaf
community that his agency "OCDAC" is an "Employment Network"
under the
new SSA Ticket to Work Plan. THIS IS NOT TRUE. HE IS LYING TO THE DEAF
COMMUNITY. For confifrmation of this lie, contact Donald Cook, one of
the Program Managers for the Ticket to Work Program that is being run by
Maximus, Inc. -- his voice number is (866)968-7842, extension 6720, or
email DonaldCook@maximus.com . Richard Roehm and "OCDAC" are NOT
involved with the SSA Ticket to Work program's Employment Network.

Mr. Roehm has also illegally obtained the email lists for WRAD and also
for the GLAD organization in Southern California and he may have other
mailing lists, too. He has been using those lists to frighten, scare,
mislead, deceive and defraud many people and organizations in the deaf
community for several years. He has criticized almost every organization
within the deaf community, including WRAD, GLAD, the NAD, the CAD, and
many WRAD and GLAD subsidiaries.

Mr. Roehm is also under indictment and in court proceedings for abusing
his former deaf and disabled wife, and he is alleged to have abused
and/or lied to many other deaf people, particularly deaf women.

Mr. Roehm is known to operate "OCDAC," "Deaf Advocacy Network,"
and
several other websites. Apparently, he has not worked at a regular job
in general society for many years, and he is spending most of his time
creating havoc, confusion, dissent, fears and fraud throughout the deaf
community on the worldwide Internet.

THE DEAF COMMUNITY IS CAUTIONED AND WARNED NOT TO LISTEN TO, BELIEVE, OR
COOPERATE WITH FRAUDULENT INDIVIDUALS OR FRAUDULENT ORGANIZATIONS.

WRAD FRAUD REPORT- ADDITIONAL INFO

Many people in the deaf community have commented to WRAD that there are
some people who have been working "under the table" and not reporting
their income to the Social Security Administration. There are
unfortunately also still some people who try to illegally "fake" being
deaf to get SSA benefits when they are not really eligible for those
benefits. These people who act illegally hurt BOTH the deaf community
AND the hearing taxpayers who are providing those government benefits to
deaf and disabled people.

If you know anyone who is acting illegally or fraudulently while
receiving SSI, SS Retirement, SSDI, and/or SSDAC government benefits
from the United States Social Security Administration, you can go to the
website at http://www.ssa.gov/oig/guidelin.htm and file a CONFIDENTIAL
report. You can also make a fraud report at any Social Security office.

Please MAKE SURE that you are telling the TRUTH if you make a fraud
report about anyone. But if someone is really acting illegally, then
their illegal actions should be reported to SSA. We all have a duty as
citizens to report illegal actions to the appropriate authorities.

Ouch...good thing that was uncovered as soon as it was posted online. That guy had no right to do such an thing because it's ILLEGAL.
