An open toilet can also attract thirsty cats and dogs, and be a catch basin for anything that gets dropped or knocked over in the bathroom.
When a toilet isn't in use, it should be closed.
We have slow-closing lids on our toilets, so it makes it even easier. Just a light tap on the lids, and they slowly close without effort.
When you say closed you mean both seat and lid correct?
