Polio threatens US

Stupidity is more of a threat to the US than polio.

I'm sure about there is possibly first polio case reported in Chicago in next year.

I got the all my shots on my leg , my mom was given a shot in her arm when she a younger and it left a scar on her arm and she did not want that happen to her daughters. I had a cousin that had polio so mom wanted her kids to have the shot . I can't understand how any parents would want to risk their kids health for any reasons.
The only scar I ever got from a shot was my smallpox vaccination but everyone got that scar so it was no big deal.

Oh wow, I never take smallpox vaccination.

My mom end with a scar and her arm was a little flat from the shot too. Mom said the when nurse give her the shot , the doctor was asking the nurse what did she use on mom arm and mom got worried and told her mother she think the nurse did something wrong . Sure enough the nurse messed up and mom arm got weird looking and she had a small dent in her arm with a scar the size of a quarter on her arm . So we got our shot on our legs .

That is because the vaccination campaign worked and now smallpox only exists in laboratories.

Of course the huge amount of people under thirty who are unvaccinated makes it an ideal chemical weapon.

Yes.

One correction--smallpox would be a biological weapon not chemical.

Smallpox inoculation wasn't an injection; it was 15 small skin pricks in a circular pattern. Fun.

Smallpox vaccine require more than one injection?

If anyone get smallpox before so they will never get it again, similar to chicken pox?

We got all 15 pokes at one time.

It wasn't an injection into a vein; it was poked into the flesh of the arm.

It was supposed to be for life-time protection but now they say it is not unless we get a booster (which usually no one does).

My daughter got the chicken pox vaccine but still got chicken pox in kindergarten. It was a very mild case though. Only a few spots and they were gone after a couple days. Still had to keep her out of school for week.

We need find a cure for forum trolling.

No cure for trolling but there is a vaccine - the ban hammer.

yeah most schools required for kids to get vaccined before they enter. even for kids sports.

The new polio is pretty bad. My microbiology teacher talks about updates almost every class session. Apparently here in Los Angeles they are telling the cops to be super careful on the street with the people because there is no cure and they are likely to die by contracting this disease.

Polio: Pakistan polio outbreak hits record high
Pakistan has recorded its highest number of polio cases for 15 years, with health officials blaming the rise on attacks on immunisation teams.

The number of new cases in 2014 so far is 202, exceeding the 199 cases in 2001 but short of the 558 cases in 1999.

Most of the infections are in the north-western tribal region where militants have targeted health teams.

Militants there accuse doctors of being spies and say the vaccinations are part of a Western plot to sterilise Muslims.

Suspicions over the programmes worsened after the US was accused of using a fake vaccination programme during its tracking of al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011.

Since December 2012, about 60 people, including health workers and police providing security to medical teams, have been killed by Taliban militants targeting polio teams.

The BBC's Shaimaa Khalil in Islamabad says the rise in cases is hugely embarrassing to Pakistan.

The country has failed to curb the disease despite massive investment on immunisation programmes by the international community, she adds.

Earlier this year, the World Health Organization imposed travel restrictions on the country meaning all Pakistanis must now carry proof of vaccination before travelling abroad.

Pakistan is one of three countries where polio is endemic - the other two being Afghanistan and Nigeria.
