Just so you all know -
My MAIN reason I started this thread is because people are wishing they went to a Deaf school after they see the benefits of the schools at a later age (20's) and obviously its a bit too late for them.

I guess I wanted to raise awareness of future implications.

I'll watch the thread and let you guys argue the sexual abuses and such...

Very saddening.

I was 30 years old when I finally saw the benefits of attending a deaf school for me. I became angry at my family and lashed out against them for putting me in such a restrictive educational setting that didnt allow me to fully thrive.

No need for the lashing out :) I'm sure you are past that. Every parent wants to have the best for their child.

I applaud them for the efforts though.

I'm just trying to raise awareness here, that is all.

Just explaining that it had happened to me just like you described. That was 8 years ago when I was really going through an identify confusion. Growing up, I tried so hard to be "hearing" because I was around all hearing peers all the time except for my best friend who also identified herself the same way.

I just don't think denying a child the best possible education because of a hypothetical problems is a good move. Maybe something will happen, but chances are against it. The odds are in your favor that everything will be fine. Just stay involved and teach your child how to protect themselves (stranger danger, bad touches, etc.) and stand up for themselves.
Exactly!!!! Rockdrummer you don't understand that the case you cited was due to improper placement. A deaf kid with very profound conduct disorder (ie he'd be seen as one of the really fucked up kids at a juvie hall) was the cause of the Washington School for the Deaf sexual abuse.
Another thing that they could do is strictly screen kids to make sure that they wouldn't profoundly disrupt life. Actually, at many Deaf schools they have a seperate program (self contained and strictly supervised at ALL times ) and even seperate campuses for dhh kids with severe behavoiral issues.
I am far more worried about the bullying either of my children will endure in public schools. Children committing acts of self harm and even suicide because of the bullying they suffer is absolutely unacceptable. Schools letting it happen is without a doubt criminal.

Both of my girls have a congenital neurological condition that is visibly noticeable. Knowing what horrid creatures tween-teen girls can be, I am scared to death what they will go through at the hands of their classmates just because of a few spots or bumps.
WeeBeastie, AMEN!!!!! Suburban teen girls can be SO superfical and so almost sociopathic.

As far as I can tell, 100% of parents said they would consider it and will or have looked into it.

What more do you want?

You keep saying the case that I posted as in a single case. I posted several cases from different sources listing several deaf schools and the cases are recent.

The whole discussion about abuse has been a kicked dead horse already. As I keep mentioning it was ONE of the considerations. And one that can't be ignored or taken lightly. We have agreed that abuse happens everywhere. OK so be it. It still does not negate it from consideration. And to say that it doesn't happen and is a myth is denial.

That's your decision and if you feel your son is happy and thriving where he is now, that's great. Just hope you are aware of his needs being met being mainstreamed. Like PFH said, he wants to raise awareness of what happens to deaf children when they grow up and regret not going to a Deaf school or getting their needs fully met especially in the socio-emotional areas.

I don't know what your definition of mainstreamed is but he is in a deaf ed class with other deaf kids. The class he is mainstreamed in is PE and even then the other deaf boys in his class are there too. I am comfortable that his needs are being met and am further confident that his high school (next year) has an outstanding DHH program which was voted best in state above the deaf school for the year 2007. He is a happy kid surrounded by a family that loves him unconditionally. My gut tells me he will be just fine.

I was surrounded by a family that loved me..just the "identity" that I struggled with because I wanted to be hearing so bad and hated my deafness. I was brainwashed by the teachers and other kids that being deaf was something very bad so I grew to hate it and then hating myself. That was what I am talking about.

Yeah the others have been run off. It's a shame.

what others? The rest of those parents with CI kids that I know of were strong oralists who wanted nothing to do with ASL in their children's lives.

Not true Shel... Most of them constantly said they signed and continued to sign. It just fell on deaf ears... no pun intended.

I can assure you that is not the case for my boy.
