Care to debunk the myth? Might be interesting for some of the lurkers.....and yes, I would strongly quibble that AVT kids are on par socially.....

As for someones comment on hearing impaired. That is the term used by the school systems here ( in NH and probably in many school systems) for children who have a mild loss and function well with Hearing aides in regular mainstream classes with little to no supports.
You folks seem to seek out anything/one you can attack that doesnt conform to your exact beliefs or thoughts and ways.
If you respected others /all who write here and not beat them up in your responses then you would not have defensive writings going on. I dont know who Faire Jour is or what happened there but I can say if whoever that was was treated as I have been I understand their reason for their responses maybe being defensive, and being banned at that point isnt a bad thing as it appears that there is no support or understanding going on here.

In life we all dont have the money to just pay for an education we want for our child/children. Moving wasnt and isnt an option either... Life is just not that easy and simple. As for wanting my son to go to Clarke... for years I fought the district to get him there, yet they kept saying they had him in an appropriate program in their mainstream. I did get him tutoring and other supports, but an appropriate school program is what he needed most and until he was literally failing and they knew they would not prevail in a due process case, they placed him at Clarke. It is not an easy simple process and unfortunately many children in this state fall through the cracks and dont get what they truly need for supports and an education. A parent needs to be a strong persistent advocate. Unless you are independently wealthy, this is generally what goes on.

Wow, you really do sound like someone else we are all very famiiar with.:hmm:

If your school system is using the term "hearing impaired" to refer to your child as if he is a broken hearing child, then you should be spending much of your time educating them and advocating in the use of accurate and appropriate terminology.:cool2:

You are just another hearing parent with no understanding of the issues facing your child, and spending all of your time and energy trying to make him into a reasonable facsimle of the hearing child you feel you were cheated out of. Deal with your issues. You are certainly not helping your child with your attitude.

The lack of support and understanding is not coming from the deaf. I is coming from you and resides in your own home. Your child is the one that is suffering from it. Poor kid.

You need to spend less time finding excuses why you can't. You are wasting precious time and energy that could be devoted to attending to your son's deaf needs instead of your needs.

You have sat by and watched as your child fell further and further behind in an oral environment, and you want to blame the school system for your failure as a parent to address his needs appropriately. That is pathetic. The school system, in their attempts to meet his needs by providing the visual supports that this child so desperately needs has acted with more consciousness and care for this child than you yourself have. Shame on you.
 
Kids are like sponges, they soak up their family's ideology, spoken or not. Kids soaking up their hearing parents' anti-ASL mentality is not much different than learning racism or sexism. It's usually never an overt message, but it can be felt and seen in many ways. If someone had proposed teaching me ASL when I was a kid, well DUH, I would've run for the hills.

Only an adult will choose wisely the best path for his/herself when given a choice, not a kid who's just trying to fit in. This is where the "adults", the parents, need to make the choice for the kid learn ASL early on.
 
Lastly read the federal statute... under IDEA it lists under definitions, child with a disability "hearing IMPAIRMENT including deafness.". Why dont you all go argue with Congress and educate them, and stop insulting those who thought they could come here for information and/or support............

Your chiild doesn't have a hearing impairment other than/including deafness. Your child is deaf.

Go learn some ASL.

We know why it is used. Audsim. Seeing a deaf child as a broken hearing child. If you want to define your child that way, I guess it is your decision. Just don't look for anyone here to approve. If you want to subscribe to society's audist views instead of speaking out against the very concept that does great damamge to your own child through creation of barriers and oppression, be my guest. Just don't look for support in your efforts from the deaf community.

"Hearing impairment" is going the way of "mentally retarded" and "frigid" and "negro", etc etc. Many clinical terms found in government literature has been recognized as politically incorrect and retired over time.

Please calm down.

We're not trying to attack you.

We understand that the term "hearing impaired" is used in certain areas, such as documentation, Congress, etc.

We were only trying to share that the Deaf community doesn't like the term as it feels "negative". Maybe just trying to show you something, that's all.
 
Emeryslane's "You people" was kind of a weird warm-fuzzy compliment for me. Having never belonged to a community before - I finally found my peoples! :D

and I second what Abby wrote in the sense of belonging...I've been involved in various communities aside from what is considered "dominant" but this transcends that, in the conscious-ness shift I feel when I leave and go "out there", and when I return.
