I'll say that if you're looking to blow off steam, I'd pursue other options first.

I wouldn't. To me, the potential consequences aren't worth it. Especially if it's just to blow off steam.

why bother? wouldnt it be better to have something that develops into something wonderful and long lasting?

Do you mean is OK to have an one nightstand if you had a fight with a partner? If that what you mean it would depend on if you're looking for a way to break up with someone. An one nightstand will do the trick!

Assuming that you are single and the other person is single, I don't think there is anything morally wrong with it. You are both consenting adults.

However, that doesn't mean that it is without consequences.

Most people, including myself, can't have sex without getting at least a little bit attached to the person. This is a result of bonding hormones in both men and women that activate during sexual intimacy. And I think for people who are often socially isolated, at least in my personal experience, that instinct to bond will be a lot stronger.

This bonding function's evolutionary purpose is to keep the mates around to raise the kid. Never mind that you don't expect a kid to result from the one night stand. Evolution's programming is not going to turn off.

The other problem is accidental pregnancy (sometimes purposeful - "I'm on the pill, really!") and transmission of STDs. This can be addressed by the practice of safer sex, using condoms and so forth.

Another consequence is your reputation in the community. Word *will* get around, no matter what your partner of the night says. People see things, assume things. Can you live with it?

Personally, I prefer to have sexual intimacy with a woman that I know and respect. It's just better that way, I think.

Sex itself is a great thing and it is a important and wonderful part of being human. You just have to be careful who you're doing it with... sometimes social conventions are there for a good reason. It takes a lot of maturity on your part and your partner's part to go outside social convention.

I dont think there's anything wrong with one night stands at all as long as both parties understand that that is what it is and nothing more.

iam with DeafCaroline on that one. As long as both parties take precautions and all that.

Nah, the point was why would someone post "No, but I would do other things...." and leave it at that............................

That's not what I said.
I said, "if you're looking to just blow off steam, I'd pursue other options first".

Such as; exercising, writing, going at it with a punching bag etc.

Such the politician aren't you?

Thanks for clarifying.

The lesson we take from this: ideas which seem excellent after 6 coolers and 4 shots tequila...usually not good ideas in harsh light sober morning.

Hmm...if I needed to blow off steam sexually, then sex would be the answer, not writing on a piece of paper or punching a stuffed bag. Adults are sexual beings, nothing wrong with having sex for the sake of having sex.

Oh yea! I had a few one night stands when I was so desperate for sex. Lol

Too bad Americans are programmed to think sex = bad.

Our "Puritan heritage" is still with us... unfortunately.

They were Calvinists who were kicked out of England.

Why were they kicked out of England? Oh, they started a civil war and killed the king and imposed a theocracy. Oliver Cromwell led them.

What were they doing in England?

Oh, they were kicked out of France.

Why were they kicked out of France?

Because they took over a whole city and imposed a theocracy. Citizens had leave a window or door open at all times, so the morality police could keep an eye on everyone to make sure they were doing anything "bad".

What was the penalty for the slightest "bad" thing? Death. Usually by burning.

What was the penalty for the slightest "bad" thing among the Puritans in the New World? Often times death, sometimes by burning. Yes, people were burned at the stake in the New World.

So who started the whole Calvinist movement?

John Calvin.

Who is strongly influenced by the Calvinst strain today?

Southern Bapists, Presbyterians, Christian fundamentalists, and a strongly-fundamentalist movement called Dominionist Theology, or Restoration Theology, which aims to establish a theocracy in the U.S.

Because of all this interwoven into American thinking, we as a culture are twisted up in guilt about sex, even as we fantasize about it.

*sarcasm mode on* Charming, isn't it? *sarcasm mode off*
