On Call Doctors and Police Officers

SxyPorkie - That's fantastic! Those cops certainly had their head on straight to find another cop who could sign, and have him waiting for you at the ER!

I'm sorry to say I don't think the cops, Fire Dept, or most EMT's in our area would have had a clue to get an interpreter, let alone know WHERE to find one.

That was one of the reasons I started learning sign. I was an EMT and wanted to be sure I could communicate with Deaf patients.

SxyPorkie,
Thank You for sharing the story about the officer who could sign.

Cheri... to this point I agree with you completely.. I had been to the hospital,, always demand for an interpreter... they wanted to use my daughter to interpret for them,,, I refused... due to conflct of an interest...
Few years ago,,, I had bad car accident..Police came and tried to save me i spoke with my voice telling her I was deaf.. Luckily she knew the sign langauge,, when i arrived in the Emergency Room.. there is a police officer ready for me.. he was using ASL.. it helped me alot while waiting for an interpreter and my daughter arrivals,,

Thanks...

Wow! I admire you for that! I don't think it is proper for any deaf parents to use their kids as their interpreter at young age. I can understand why they had to use their hearing kids to interpret for them, but I don't think it is a good idea. I don't think kids should be take a big responsibility to interpret something serious to their parents if they are going to die soon. my opinion, it is too much for them to take.

I absolutely agree that children shouldn't interpreter for their parents but for little things I think it's okay, sometimes I may not understand what a sale person is saying, I may need my oldest son to help me a bit ....
