Ohio teen killed mom over Halo 3 video game

That is very sad.:(

Wow...just wow.

My mom used to take away my videogames stuff when I was a kid, whenever I get in trouble and I get mad in those times but did I ever try to kill my mom? No. I just try to find other things to do even thou I'm a hardcore gamer, I know there's more to life than just videogames.

Halo 3 is one of my favorite games too and I wouldnt kill my own mom if she try to take it away from me for something but I'm 24 now lol so too old to do that sort of punishment thing.

Anyway, there's something that confuse me from what his father said about the game:

His father forbade the games, saying that were too violent and sexually explicit.

How is there any sexuality showing in Halo 3? It's a future war based game. And if he was talking about cortana, the hologram computer girl...thats different. shes just a computer. :roll:she's not like shes nude or whatever.

Even thou he was 16, and the game is rated Mature as in for 17 and older I guess his parents are overstrict since he is not 17 yet anyway but I guess their rules is their rules so he have no choice but to accept that.

I've played ALOT of M-rated games even when I was 13 years old *shrugs* I guess my mom dont know alot about videogames but at least I know better from fantasy to reality when it comes to killing and stuff...I wouldnt ever kill anyone in real life so yeah I'm not that stupid.

That boy really have issues. It is a great loss that he killed his own mother over a videogame and he would regret that for years.

Blame overstricted parents.

Dont matter. Parents set their own rules with their children who are especially teens for a reason, whether he likes it or not.

And he didnt like it so he killed his own mother and shot his father in the head which he was VERY lucky to survive that and you still blame them?

Let's see how it works out for you when you are a parent someday. Being a parent is NEVER easy.

Blame overstricted parents.

i applaud the parents for being strict. good for them. far too many parents nowadays let their children get away with everything. for a change, it's nice to see parents who actually take the responsibility of having children seriously by disciplining them when necessary.

I don't think the video game is the cause of this. It may have fed his *aggression* but it certainly did not make him a killer.

I take it you all did not read the whole article, or skirmish it.

Daniel was homebound for a year with nothing to do but watch television and play video games, Kersey said. It was during that time that he became fascinated with the Halo series and would play them for hours at friends' houses. His father forbade the games, saying that were too violent and sexually explicit.

I blame the parents because they did not take son out, send him to sport organizations, like soccer club, volleyball club, or any club that he is interested in. Maybe video-gaming club would do. It is not good for parents to let son stay home and do nothing. When their son want to do something productive, halo is on his mind. Parents should be responsible to get rid of "halo" on his mind by taking him out fun activities. Se why I blame parents for not doing anything to their own son. I know many of my friends who are parents discipline their own child by taking away something they love, and those child did not do something seriously to parents, obviously this child needed some kind of "help" between him and his parents before he shot parents.

why should parents be responsible for entertaining their child? the teenager in this article could have participated in afterschool extra-curricular activities, joined a church group, gone to the library on a weekly basis or volunteered once or twice a week.

when i was a teenager, my parents didn't entertain me and yet i found plenty of things to do on my own: i joined the school newspaper, forensics (speech club), debate team, academic decathalon, advanced choir, band and hung out with my friends just to name a few.

when i was at home, i spent my time reading, writing, talking to my friends on the phone, listening to my stereo or watching tv.

long story short, the parents are *not* to blame.

One thing that made him, the teen, go crazy.

He played halo 10+ hours a day. He was super elite on it. He reached 20 kills in a row without dying. Therefore he thought it's just like life, he's not dying, he's killing a lot. KILLING A LOT.

It's possible that he was trying to break his record and ignored his mom, but his mom probably took the cd out while he was playing, that must've pissed him off, probably still in the stage to kill. Therefore, the results reside.

Still, shooting them isnt going to fix the problem.

10 hours a day??? Wow...and I usually play games from an hour or two a day. When I first got Halo 3, I played it for almost 8 hours trying to beat the game and I did.

But wow...10 hours a day is insane. I love videogames, but I dont intend to play them ALL day...I rather do other things as draw, go out with people, read comics, watch a movie, etc...

Yes, One of Petric’s friends, 17-year-old Jonathan Johnson, testified that Petric was so obsessed with the Halo series of games that he would play them seven or eight hours a day at Johnson’s house.

One marathon weekend — about a week before the shooting on Oct. 20, 2007 — they played Halo for 16 to 18 hours a day, stopping only to eat, sleep and use the bathroom, Johnson said. Petric’s father had kicked him out of the house after a fight and Petric crashed with Johnson’s family.

But mother is dead... :(

Father lost his son and his wife over a video game. :(

The teenagers would find the way they can rebel if the parents are too strict on them that´s why I prefer to use positive discipline over too strict on my boys.

He never got to play it at home. He sneaked out to buy the game on his own, but got caught when he came back home... and his dad took the game away from him.

Yes, I am with you on this but that teenager did the wrong to shot his own mother.

Accord some of article that the teenager play video games 18 hours per day??? Is it normal? His parents are suppose to teach him what right and wrong - what life is about but front of computer 18 hours a day? Did they let him do that?

liebling,

i think this teenager would have rebelled regardless of how strict his parents were. any teenager who wants to kill -- will -- as long as he or she has a means to do so.

i still stand by my opinion that children should be disciplined. i was raised in a very strict household (with a strong catholic upbringing since age 5) and yet i never murdered my parents.

in fact, if anything, i thank my parents for caring enough about me to make sure that i always stayed out of trouble.

Why? Because he was selfish and went against his parents wishes in not to buy one.

Ahh the 'blame game'. What happend to take responsibility for one's actions? If you told your child not to buy one and they went against your wishes, wouldn't you confiscate it as a punishment?

But if he paid the games with his money which mean is his property doesn´t it? Halo 3 video game is restriction from 16 years old.
