To be fair, those previous instances were isolated "lipstick" statements. They weren't made a week after a female candidate used the word and had become identified with it. Very different circumstances.

I still believe Obama's remark probably wasn't a conscious slur but it sure was bad timing. He should have realized that he put his foot in it.

No more so than Palin putiing her foot in it when using the comment during her acceptance speech. Again, no doubt unconsciously, as her speech was written by Bush's speech writer, but she made it all the same. And her remark was a direct reference to herself.

I should have know better than to state, "to be fair." Obviously, rational fairness is not part of this discussion.

There is a huge difference between self-deprecating humor and third-party insult.

If you don't want the self depracting humor to become a common reference, it is best not to use it. Then we also might want to keep in mind that we don't need a Roseann Barr imitator in the White House.

That's right, blame the person who uses self-deprecating humor instead of the person who used it for insult.

You must be really desperate to compare Palin's sense of humor to Barr's vulgar speech and behavior.

Thought you said that he didn't use it as an intentional insult, but that it was interpreted that way. The only desperate ones around here are the Repubs that are whining about the use of a common phrase. Instead of spending so much of their time looking for insults, hurling insults, and attempting to be comediennes, they should be concentrating on the issues.

And I'm not blaming the one that used the self deprecating humor. I am saying if she uses it, she can't whine when others do, too. I thought she was such a tough woman. She's coming across as a whiner now.

He didn't intend for that phrase to be a personal insult. But his overall illustration was to demean his opposing candidates and their platform.

It doesn't bother me one iota. I was just trying to explain the textual reasons why it could be problematic. It's a problem for speech writers to keep in mind.

That goes for both parties, of course. :) Applies to the comediennes and comedians, eh? No sexism please. :D

Did she whine? I missed that. Please give me the link.

Absolutley.

thanks for link! I tried out the tax calculator and it said...

$500 tax savings... I may be eligible for $4,000 Tax Credits to pay for college expenses and 50% tax credit for up to $1000 for retirement savings.

ME LIKEY!

Makes eligible for $1800 in tax savings under Obama but only $100 under McCain.

Yep, the whole lipstick campaign is getting old.

I told you so! :)

If you vote for Obama, you'll get BIGGER tax cuts.
