NYC is now one of the safest cities.

"New York City, despite a sharp economic downturn, is set to end the year with the lowest number of murders since record-keeping began almost half a century ago.

Figures up to December 27 show that the city had recorded 461 murders — a fraction of the peak of 2,245 in 1990 at the height of a crack-fuelled crime surge."

It is a good number and good news, but I don't like how they describe New York City as "one of the safest cities" now.

why not? that's still better than living in city with thousands of murders, right?

*sigh*
I guess I'll have to concede this time. :hmm:
And Jiro...I think you're eight dollah went down an alley-way and into a strip club. :giggle:

Los Angeles has 291 murders as Dec 2009 but not final report yet.

461 murders in a single year in NYC?

Let's see. NYC is 301 square miles big. Or about 17 miles by 17 miles large.
nycgo / nyc statistics

That's 1.5 murder per square mile or 1.3 murders a day. Not exactly a walk in a park.

I visited the interior of NYC once and I certainly wasn't inspired by sprawling concrete, buildings and traffic congestion. Visiting it once is enough. Never again.

Seattle had only 30 murders last year, but don't know about this year. 461 for over 8.2 million people is pretty good ratio, though.

The murder rate is usually counted per 100,000, it will lower if more population.

Yes, it is single year since crime rate is counted every year.

You're so fond of muddling the numbers, are you?

You live in Albuquerque, NM? Let's check the numbers there... murder is 51 out of 468,764

You're more likely to be murdered in Albuquerque than in NYC.

Given the facts, I'd rather live in NYC because it is REALLY safer and less violent.

lol, NYC isn't for me due I'm hardcore southerner, being in south as always.

It seems to me that larger cities often have low crime rates. I'm not exactly sure why that is.

Speaking of which... The town I live in is more safer than NYC, by far.

well - Philadelphia continues to have high crime rate. Detroit too. But why it's working in NYC? It's because of Malcolm Gladwell's consultation and dedication by NYC's Finest - Bratton... and few other variables.

Seatle is 91 square miles or 8 miles by 8 miles large just for perspective here. That'd be .3 murder for every square mile which would be 5 times less than NYC.
