NY and WH discriminate against blind people?

I am not fond of Michael Steele's views just like I am not with Bush's views but that doesnt make me a black or a white hater, doesnt it? If it does, then go ahead label me racist.
You're right- it doesn't make you racist. The problem is that people in the media and even an ex-president have been painting people like me as racist for opposing the President. I don't take it personally, but this sort of thing is poisonous for society as a whole.

That's true. My hubby's parents call him their "white" kid because he doesnt act black enough.

Did they make fun of him for marrying you? My wife's family makes fun of her for marrying me, "a white person." The whole " I knew you'd marry a white person."

The same thing applies to those for "acting like a hearing person," too. But that's another topic.

I was and still am being accused of that but I stopped letting that bother me.

I agree.

Haha... I am guilty of that too. I just got mad at one Deaf community, and applied it to the entire population; rather than acknowledging that there are a few overly vocal members. Wee... enthocentralism at its best.

I still catch myself applying ethnocentralism though... kinda hard to keep myself in check when Canada is a cultural mosaic rather than a melting pot like the United States. You know the whole idea that... you keep your own cultural identity and you stay within that identity as long you tolerate others?

I've done that myself.

As for Canadians, are Canadians cultural pluralists? Virgina used to be something of a cultural pluralist colony centuries ago; my Swiss-German ancestors on my mother's side didn't learn to speak English till the 1800s.

Oh yea...and that my son is the "white" version of my hubby. We dont take it seriously.

I take that as a "No?"

ah... putting word in my mouth, si? the answer is - I don't give a shit because I am not a die-hard DNC fan. I support America and its democratic concept. Political affiliation is of no concern to me. I vote for those whose belief and view coincides with mine - regardless of political affiliation, gender, color, and age. :cool2:

the funny thing is.... this racism subject is another topic too.... not even pertinent to this thread which is about blind people

My father told me that he voted for JFK - the only Democratic Presidental candidate he ever voted for - (he has voted for Douglass Wilder, a black Democratic VA Governer) because he was anti-Communist.

I laugh whenever they do that.

I dont really make a big deal out of it and dont hold that against the Deaf community as a whole. I guess I just dont really care enough to laugh about it. I understand that every cultural group has their own issues and this is one of them in the Deaf culture. No biggie.

but if it makes you laugh and have fun..no harm in it.

That wasn't the question I was referring to but about what Perryman stated when it comes to bringing closure:

"In my letter to the DNC, I expressed similar sentiments. I told the DNC ‘An apology is one of the only ways modern-day Democrats can distance themselves from the party’s racist past while bringing some closure to the African American Community.”

Why are Democrats so adamant on not apologizing? Is it out of fear that people will find out and it's better not to apologize? What?

Some people have admitted that they felt they had to walk on eggshells if they disagree with Obama's policies for fear of being labeled racist. Then, if they arent racist then why the need of having to walk on eggshells? :hmm:

Because I find it hurtful to be accused of something I am not.
As a blind person I wouldn't know if I had black friends unless they told me they were black. It really doesn't bother me.
I just don't like Obama because his views on life.

Growing up I have been accused of so many things and I stopped allowing it to hurt me. My closest friends and families know the true me and that's the only important thing to me.

I get accused of acting sighted, but usually the accusation is from other sighted people who know nothing about blindness. From what I've observed, there's not too much pressure in the blind community at large to "act blind." But if we're looking at some subcultures, like the NFB, then it's a whole different story. So I guess we have our own version too.

I've done that myself.

Yep. Well, it's not as strong it used to be like back in the early 1900s, but it is still everywhere.

For the longest time, I couldn't find a word that explain the discrimination between groups-- it's like racism, but it doesn't fall into the definition of racism since it's not quite that shallow, more like it's based on cultural background, accents and languages, not physical traits... then I found out a new word: ethnocentralism.

If the Democrats apologize, what would it accomplish? I am a Democrat and I wasnt a part of the racism back then so why should I apologize? I think anyone who practices racism should apologize themselves as individuals not as a whole political party.

That's interesting. I never had trouble identifying black people when I was hearing-sighted. Most black people (not all) have a texture to their voice that "gives them away." Of course it's not totally foolproof, but I had my share of incidences where black people were shocked to know I knew they were black.
