NTID Community:

As you may know, there have been a considerable number of concerns expressed by members of the RIT/NTID community about the name of the Alexander G. Bell Hall and commemorative plaque honoring Bell posted in the foyer of the building. It is argued by many that a number of attitudes, opinions, and actions that Alexander G. Bell promoted during his lifetime are not supportive of the diversity of people who are deaf, and therefore do not represent NTID.

Alan Hurwitz

Above letter was issued to NTID community. I am in favor to re change the name bec AGB did not support the diversities of communication forms. Instead AGB promoted the oralism as the absolute method for the deaf and he declared deafness to be defective. AGB believed in Eugenics. So I hope NTID committee will vote to remove AGB and renamed to other person (the rumor says it may be Davlia) .

What s your take on this situation? I m curious.

Yup, kill AGB for good, they sucks.

Davlia would be good one, it make more honor to him. :)

Dang, I didn't know AGB believed in that sort of stuff.

Heck ya, kick him off.

I'm an alumni of RIT/NTID back in 70's. Was was the name of building before changed to Alexander G. Bell Hall?

Good question. I just enrolled NTID last fall so I have no idea. I believe Vamprox just graduated last yr. So he should have answer.

Oh alright ... thanks!

So you think the name of AGB should be removed from any deaf colleges or schools since AGB believed that deaf people have no value in this society and deaf people should eliminated (eugenics) from gene pool?

Or you re in favor that he should be remain as "hero" in deaf community since he fought so hard to keep oralism to thrive and bec of him, oralism prevailed?

Gee... AGB died years ago. Just because an organization does this doesn't mean we should blame AGB.

What if I set up an organization and named it "LBJ". Then, I start doing anti-deaf stuff.

Does that mean that they should rename LBJ?

AGBell had no respect for deaf people and their rights so yes, remove his name. It would be like having a plague with Hilter's name on a Jewish temple. It wouldnt make sense.

I am sure that you are aware that NTID supports the diversities of communication forms from oralism to ASL. The problem here is that AGB was very borderline to being insane like Hitler by suggesting deafness itself is disease and should be avoid at all cost

In his lecture Memoir upon the formation of a deaf variety of the human race presented to the National Academy of Sciences on 13 November 1883 he noted that congenitally deaf parents were more likely to produce deaf children and tentatively suggested that couples where both parties were deaf should not marry

so why should we honor his tainted name? I know for the sure I am not only one person who feels this way.

Yup both of them are wacky.

From what I learned about AGB, he was NOT a hero. The name should be REMOVE.

Yup. He is Satan and I hope he rots in hell. We gotta thank Gallaudet (and NTID) for preserving ASL during dark times in deaf history (1880-1960),

I say remove the plaque and make a statement in support of the deaf. An action like this by NTID would carry a lot of weight.

And while you're at it, make a post scripted statement that AgBell was NOT the first to invent the modern day telephone; he stole it from another guy! :giggle:

Yup correct.

Antonio Meucci (Florence, April 13, 1808 – October 18, 1889) was an Italian-born inventor who developed a form of voice communication apparatus in 1857. Many believe that he should be credited with the invention of the telephone (i.e., electrical voice communication). Antonio Meucci was recognized as the first inventor of the telephone by the United States House of Representatives, in House Resolution 269, dated 11 June, 2002

It's up to the NTID Community, I have no say what goes and what stays.

remove plague must go..

Doesn't make sense nowadays they are ASL why plague says.. Oral only and not allowed Sign language people marry to oral.. that heck stupid plague on it agbell..

Agbell must remove it.

Absolutely.:giggle: And we could also add a bit of information regarding his flawed philosophy of eugenics as applied to inherited forms of deafness.

No... no building on RIT/NTID campus that was renamed to Alexander G. Bell Hall. see RIT: What's In A Name? - Buildings AGB Hall is also known as Tower C.

The person who wrote the letter in first post does not understand the reasoning behind the naming of residence halls...

see AGBell/Tower C Mania -- found in blank and I hope you and others understand the reasoning behind the naming of the hall. It was dedicated by a relative of AGB. There is already a balance on NTID campus. There is no need to go biased on one side.

NTID already have speech therapy, CI supports, ASL etc etc... NTID caters to all walk of life with hearing loss regardless of communication modes.

Well, his beliefs were based on his lifetime... not ours.

Years ago, a lot of people thought that deaf people couldn't do anything. Do we look at those people and degrade them or protest them in every manner possible? No.

We do look back and laugh... while applauding ourselves today for where we are.

There's no need to suddenly attack someone today for something that happened years ago. NTID was founded 35 years ago. Why wait 35 years to say something today?
