Not Deaf enough??

Hey everyone, tbh I am actually a bit scared of posting here and i don't really know if I should. But anyway I'm doing it.
So I'm hearing and have not had any contact with any Deaf community, which I think sucks for me.
So why am I even writing here? Well I am currently writing a paper about intercultural communication between h/Hearing and d/Deaf and on my search about DPN and Deaf enough I stumbled upon this page. I have read the whole thread and it shed some light and provided me with different perspectives of this debate. So I might be citing a bit from around here.
I really want to learn ASL, there is just no courses around here and I don't really have the drive to learn anything in an online course (believe me I tried). However, after reading some of your post, I, as an h/Hearie, am somewhat afraid to even attempt talking to a d/Deaf person or going to a Deaf event. ASL would be my fourth language, and I always believed that learning a language and using it to communicate with different people is to gain a new perspective on things, to experience a new culture. So for me, and I can only speak about myself and my views, learning ASL would provide me with the skills I need to talk to deaf people just like English and Dutch gave me the skill to speak with Brits/Americans and people from the Netherlands. I do realize that that may come off as totally superficial and naive and let the Hearie talk but I really wanna learn about Deaf culture. So if you have any suggestions for me on how to "behave" (or things I should put in my paper) I would be very grateful :)
Also if you wanna kick me out, I totally understand ;-)

Cheers, from Vienna :)

behave???? try not behave like Severus Snape from Harry Potter. None of deaf cant understand Severus behave like he is Sad or Serious while he laughing or happy
with his thought. We are not the mind readers.

Okay, maybe behave is/was the wrong word
what I meant was, like, are there things Hearies do that are totally inappropriate or offensive? For example, when interacting with a person belonging an Arabic culture one should never show their shoe sole, as it is offensive to do so in their culture...

Yeah like that, but I thought maybe some things that are less obvious. At least for me these things are really obvious.
Maybe you have some things that you noticed from personal experience?!
I will check out the blog some more tho so really thank you :)

hold hold ...... Don't forget #14 ..... Do not asking any Dumb Question that not relating to deaf. I tell you .... I was in barber shop getting hair cut. One of dude who is getting his haircut saw me I have a car and noticed me that i am deaf with hearing aid. He asked me front of everybody "How come you're deaf and you can drive your car?" i was thinking is he calling me Blind? so I asked him "Are you going let Blind person drive your car with you?" everybody started laughing at him. No Dumb Question.

Welcome to all deaf.
no need to be scared girl.....jump in, really the best way to get to know us is to be with us.

Wicked.
Well you wont find much ASl in your parts, austrian orbgeeman sin language or whst ever sign language the Deaf use in austria...
Me ASl,
Sign will set you free girl....

Yeah it's Austrian Sign Language around here. Sadly I'm not really finding a lot about Deaf life in Austria on the Internet it's mostly about German Deafs....
I'm looking really forward to taking some ASL classes soon :)
I actually wanted to take Austrian SL classes at uni but I that didn't work out because I did meet the prerequisites I would've had to take Ethnics classes that would've taken longer than the rest of my degree so am still bummed about that -.-

Well I'll worry about actually having a conversation when I can say more than "my name is..." ;)
But thanks :)

Is Austria close to Switzerland or Germany? If there were no Deafies in Austria where there might be in the big city, then you might have to associate with German Deafies. I learned that there are lots of Deafies in the big cities in Germany. You could learn their sign language in their country. Just my guess.

Switzerland might be a small country but probably hardly enough d/Deaf people there. I have never been to oversea to Europe or other countries. So you need to research and find what you are looking for.

For now, I don't know what to say about not have a sign language class instead of online internet for learning. It is better with people than online. You also could learn about Deaf culture with German Deaf people and sign language teacher. Their Deaf culture may be a little bit different than ours, I suppose. :hmm:

Austria close to Germany and Switzerland. She said she from Vienna. That at east Austria. Closer to Hungary, Slovakia, and Czech Republic borders.

:ty:
And I never said that there are no Deafies in Austria. It's just hard finding clubs, coz like everything else there's hardly any Austrian things going on, we're I think too tiny for I dunno anything^^
Anyway I researched Deafs in Austria a bit, however I could only find two/three sites and they're all government run and don't have any events. Plus, if you search for Deafs in Austria you'd either type in "Taube in Österreich" or and "Gehörlose in Österreich". First one you have the problem that Taube also means pigeon so the first thing that pops up is the carrier pigeon club in Austria and then a lot of restaurants, hotels and B&B....
For the second one you get only the government ones and they don't have any events -.-

Edit:
So I looked up the School for Deaf and Blind in Vienna, and they have links to clubs, sadly tho, they don't offer events that are open to the public, they are all membership only, I found one or two that are open but I'd feel weird going to a Mommy&Baby event tbh....
