North Korea severs all ties with South Korea

I have a friend who was former military for S. Korea. We had a discussion about Korea being divided and he told me the "people" of both countries want to re-unite but the government does not.

Families were torn apart forever when Korea was divided. I guess we should have let MacArthur just do his thing.

I have a question unrelated to the topic and am not trying to derail the thread at all, its just something I need clarification on. In another conversation I had with my friend, he told me a custom that Koreans have when it comes to the death of a family member. I am not sure if I understood him correctly, but what I did understand from him was this - family members go through "mourning" for a year and cannot look upwards to the sky for a year during this period ... did I understand him correctly?

The very same egomanic that didn't heed China's warning and ended up getting the country counter-invaded by a million screaming men?

I may have been taught differently ... I was taught he had the war nearly won, someone in Congress did not like the way he was doing things, pulled him out, we met with defeat after defeat and barely pushed back to the 38th.

No, he wanted Truman to nuke China. That was one of the reasons that he got rid of by Truman.

I know.

China warned the United States not to station their soldiers on the Yalu River. MacArthur ignored that; they ended up getting counter-invaded.

My grandfather called MacArthur the dumbest man alive. Not because he wasn't a genius, but because he cared more about his own image than anything else.

I wasn't trying to imply that MacArthur should have nuked China. Nukes are bad. I thought he simply wanted to disable bases in China with non nukes.

I have been known to be wrong ... its an era of history I could do a bit more reading up on.

I remember Truman and MacArthur had a very cold relationship. They did not bother to look at each other. According to MacArthur, Chinese soldiers were on Korean soil helping out, and that was one of the reasons MacArthur wanted to invade China. Truman fear it would be too much, and it lead to an argument that got MacArthur fired.

Yes you are 200% correct. My entire father's side is in North Korea and we do not know what happened to them. We have a land deed that we own a very large territory in NK but I guess our land deed is useless now. I don't know what's built on it now. and I only know my mom's side. My grandfather was a high-ranking government official for Korea & Japan. That's how he knew about upcoming war about commie so he packed up and took his family (only immediate family) to south. That probably explains why we both share trait for public service. :dunno: Anyway - all men in Korea are required to serve in military. My dad has done his. My cousins, uncles, etc. However - the mandatory military service remains a very hot topic in Korea. It is not unheard of parents pulling string or bribing official to exempt their kids or show some preferential treatment. My uncle bribed the official to assign my cousin to a very safe job - a desk job. :nono: My other cousins are in Air Force.. probably a pilot by now.

anyway I digress. If the unification happened - it will be under 2 governments. It'll probably take another several decades to merge into 1 government where all people will share same political belief.

Example - Union and Confederate

I guess we should have let MacArthur just do his thing.
trust me - Truman did the right thing. We do not need another nuclear bloodshed in the history. 2x was already too much.

huh.... interesting.. never heard of this. I'll ask my mom. My mom didn't do this when her sister recently passed away couple years ago.

non-nukes? no such thing in that era but we do have "carpet bombing" method.. the same one we used for WW2 and Vietnam. It was damaging yet ineffectual.

but yes - MacArthur raised unnecessary fuss to push to request for dozens of atomic bombs

If he knew about the repercussion of atomic bomb... I guarantee you that he would reconsider. He probably thought it was just one big bad-ass bomb without considering about radiative after-effect that will linger for decades.

I appreciate that Jiro .. thank you:ty:

My friend also took me to his family's restaurant in Atlanta - I had never seen the vegetables that I was served before. They served me a drink for eating spicy food. If something became too spicy, you sip the drink and it immediately neutralized the spiciness (what was it???).

Also, do you know if the s. Korean mandatory service includes those whom are deaf like in Israel?

I am trying to find information about the deaf serving in the Armed Forces.

In bold, no way...

USSR has nuclear weapons too and if we attack China with atomic bomb so USSR will drops the atomic bomb on US soil too, it could cause our government to cease to exist and very heavily damaged.

that spicy vegetable you ate - if it's red color.. must be "kimchi"
the drink.. was it alcoholic? if it is - could be "soju"

really? that's cool to know. I wasn't able to serve because I renounced Korean citizenship :aw:

I cannot comment until I have thoroughly read some facts. I will admit, I do not know enough about that topic and need to read up on it. I may have been taught about it from a politically biased teacher.

Politically-biased? Just read the telegraphs exchanged between China and United States before the Chinese invaded.

I don't know that until my best friend told me about situation with Korean War in year ago.

USSR started have nuclear weapon since 1949.

I'm not surprised and I don't blame you. Not many people know about Korean War..... hence "The Forgotten War". Chance is - in most high school textbooks, it's probably 1 paragraph or 1 page on Korean War.

I think WW2 and Vietnam War are pretty much the only historical foreign wars that most Americans are familiar with. :dunno:

Yes, the vegetable was red. I am not sure if it was an alcohol drink or not, I need to find it because it really worked well with spicy food. It was a great dinner drink and it tasted sweet.

My friend's name is pronounced like you would say "Key Bone" very fast with emphasis on "bone". He used to give me a soft drink which was pronounced like you would say "Vee Lock Shick Kay" and had tiny peices of rice in the drink. It was very good.

I have seen Docs that said the same thing.

Alot of people here in the "southwest" think this is the solution with the Mexico problem as well. But that's an issue for another thread.
